Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t set to launch until September, but true believers can get a small sample of the claw-slashing action – and another new character – at the movie theater right now. Insomniac is expanding its Marvel gaming universe with the upcoming Wolverine game, which was recently shown off at the June PlayStation State of Play livestream.
There, Logan tore into a horde of anti-mutant cyborg soldiers, rescued a group of young mutants, and even met his future fellow X-Man (and occasional love interest) Jean Grey. Insomniac has promised that Marvel’s Wolverine will be darker and bloodier than its previous Spider-Man offerings, and the State of Play trailer featured plenty of brutal combat and severed limbs. There were also glimpses of other popular mutants like Mystique, Sabertooth, and Omega Red, who will be along for the ride when Marvel’s Wolverine drops on September 15.
Marvel’s Wolverine Is Getting A Trailer During The Odyssey
Now, Insomniac is showing off even more of Marvel’s Wolverine, with a new trailer being released nearly two months to the day before release. This trailer is being included with screenings of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey at select theaters, and starts with Logan slashing through even more enemies in dark alleyways and snowy mountainsides as he gives yet another brooding voiceover narration.
The big surprise comes near the end, where Wolverine finds himself going claw-to-claw with another classic character from the comics: Lady Deathstrike. Yuriko Oyama has plenty of shared history with Logan, as it was her father who invented the Adamantium bonding process that gave Wolverine his unbreakable metal claws. While she isn’t a mutant herself, Lady Deathstrike received cybernetic augmentations (such as long, Adamantium claws for fingers) that make her live up to her name.
Incidentally, Lady Deathstrike was just featured in the latest episode of X-Men ’97, where she and a small band of Logan’s old teammates investigate an old Weapon X facility – and get way more than they bargained for. Fans of the old Fox-produced X-Men movies might also recall Kelly Hu’s show-stealing brawl with Wolverine in X2: X-Men United, and she has also appeared in several other Marvel video games over the years.
She quickly gains the upper hand against Logan, who is soon surrounded by a group of Hand ninjas in the middle of a rain-soaked street. As a photo of what appears to be him and Jean in happier times burns nearby, Wolverine taps into his trademark animalistic rage… much to the dismay of his enemies. We’ll get to see more when Marvel’s Wolverine leaps onto the PS5 this fall, but the fact that this trailer is being shown in theaters is pretty impressive in its own right.
