There is a lot of hype for The Witcher 4, and now the higher-ups at CD Projekt Red have given fans a rough idea about when the next installment in the epic RPG franchise will arrive. The Witcher 4 was officially announced at The Game Awards 2024 with an impressive CGI trailer centered around Ciri, who will be taking over the lead role from her mentor Geralt of Rivia in what will be the start of a brand new trilogy.
This major shakeup alone has drummed up plenty of discourse and speculation about The Witcher 4, and one of the biggest questions is just when the game will launch. Last year, CD Projekt’s chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz said that gamers shouldn’t expect it to be finished until 2027 at the earliest, and given how ambitious The Witcher 4 looks to be, it would only make sense for it to take a while longer.
CDPR Eyes 2028 Launch For The Witcher 4
CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski recently spoke to eager fans ahead of this week’s Gamescom 2026 event, and took the time to address some of the exciting Witcher projects his company has on the horizon. This includes The Witcher 4, and while Nowakowski stated outright that it won’t be shown at Gamescom this year, he can say that CDPR is looking at a 2028 release window.
Michał Nowakowski also spoke about how The Witcher 4 could be CDPR’s most ambitious game to date, featuring a huge and expansive open world, brutal gameplay, and a deep storyline that he hopes will stay with players long after they finish. He also gave a shout-out to the more than 500 talented developers who are hard at work bringing The Witcher 4 to life at CD Projekt Red HQ.
Lastly, Nowakowski says that while 2028 may still be a long time to wait for The Witcher 4, there will still be plenty of exciting Witcher content to keep fans busy: namely the upcoming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC expansion, titled Songs of the Past. It will be the third major DLC for 2015’s acclaimed title, and will be featured heavily at Gamescom this year ahead of its launch in 2027. CDPR will have a large booth on the show floor to show off Songs of the Past‘s dark story and new content.
Indeed, it looks like the next few years will be exciting for all of the Witcher fans out there, whether they’re anxious to join Geralt on another grim adventure or looking to the future to see where Ciri embarks on her own saga. Keep in mind that this 2028 launch window for The Witcher 4 is subject to change, but if CDPR can deliver on what Michał Nowakowski is promising, then the game could be well worth the wait.
Still here? Good.
