There has been a lot of exciting Marvel gaming news recently, but not every title featuring one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has made it out of the hangar – such as the cancelled Iron Man game that has reportedly been leaked online. Tony Stark has already been featured in numerous games over the years, either as a supporting character or the star of the show. His most recent outing has been Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, where he rocks a very Gundam-style look as he teams up with the Avengers to save Earth from the thrill-seeking Champion.
Aside from tearing it up in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series or lending a hand in ensemble titles like Marvel Rivals, Iron Man has headlined two not-so-fondly remembered tie-ins for the first two Iron Man movies and a standalone VR title that literally put players behind the armored Avenger’s red and gold helmet – just to name a few. At the moment, EA and Motive Studio are working on a brand-new, third-person Iron Man game, though news about it has been relatively quiet since it was first announced way back in 2022.
Avalanche Studios Was Working On A Cancelled Iron Man Game
As it turns out, there was yet another standalone Iron Man game in the works around the time that Tony and the rest of the Avengers were getting ready to rock the silver screen. Avalanche Studios, the developer behind the Just Cause series and the 2015 Mad Max video game, was reportedly working on this open-world Iron Man title for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime around 2012, as confirmed by Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg in an interview with MinnMax four years ago.
This project would ultimately be scrapped, but now raw gameplay footage of Avalanche’s Iron Man game has seemingly made its way online by a leaker who supposedly had access to aPS3 development kit. This leak was then shared on Reddit, and consists of over an hour of footage of Iron Man flying above a tropical island that wouldn’t look too out of place in Just Cause and engaging in destructive battles with giant robots and other enemies.
It should be stressed that this is a completely different project from Motive Studio’s Iron Man game, which has not been cancelled despite the previously mentioned lack of official updates. Fans looking forward to strapping on Tony Stark’s legendary armor have been waiting with bated breath, especially after EA scrapped Cliffhanger Studio’s planned Black Panther title last year.
Given Avalanche’s experience with the open-world mayhem of Just Cause and judging from the test footage available, this cancelled Iron Man game could have been a (literal) blast to play. It’s always a shame to see a promising superhero project not reach its full potential, but at least gamers can look forward to Motive’s Iron Man when it finally does emerge from the shadows like Nick Fury talking about the Avengers Initiative. Maybe at Gamescom 2026 later this week…
