Sony and Insomniac wasted no time in showing off Marvel’s Wolverine during June 2026’s PlayStation State of Play livestream, as the upcoming superhero adventure was literally the first title shown. Insomniac has already earned critical acclaim with its line of Marvel’s Spider-Man games, and fans like myself have been eager to see what the developer has cooked up with everyone’s favorite mutant… assuming your favorite isn’t Gambit… or Storm… or Nightcrawler…
The State of Play kicked off with a quick montage of gameplay snippets from Marvel’s Wolverine, followed by Logan tracking a mutant into a facility headed by a group of cyborg mercenaries named The Reavers. Logan sneaks around until he pounces on one of the unsuspecting guards, and it’s here that we see this isn’t Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Things get really bloody, really fast as Wolverine hacks and slashes his way through his enemies, and his signature yellow suit is soon covered in red.
Marvel’s Wolverine Shows Off Visceral, Bloody Combat At State Of Play
Logan cuts through a few of the Reavers with gruesome stealth takedowns, but is soon spotted. From there, he fights off more of them by dodging, countering, and lunging in a way that looks familiar to those who’ve played Insomniac’s past Marvel offerings. Once the coast is clear, Logan hears a child calling out for help in the distance and hurries over by swinging over beams and running through platforms.
The child in question is Leech of the Morlocks (a group of mutants who usually take refuge in the sewers of New York due to their strange physical appearance), who is being forced into a truck by the Reavers to be taken who-knows-where. Wolverine naturally intervenes by sending a large, steel shipping container falling toward the Reavers, drawing their attention before leaping into action for some more gruesome kills.
Just when he is about to be shot by a Reaver, the enemy starts glowing purple and is sent flying through a truck window by an ally that previous Marvel’s Wolverine leaks suggested would appear: Jean Grey. The famous telekinetic X-member floats onto the scene, sporting a jacket that makes her look more like Gambit. She uses her powers to pull down some wreckage onto the escaping truck as Logan realizes that this is the mutant he was chasing before.
More Reavers head out for another battle, though this time Jean is here to lend a psychic hand. As Wolverine twirls and slashes at enemies, Jean lifts and throws a few around, and even freezes one in place for Logan to kill. We also see Logan activate some kind of enhanced attack using his Rage Meter, which fills up as Wolverine kills enemies and can be used to unleash even deadlier moves or heal damage.
Marvel’s Wolverine Is A Different Breed

Unfortunately, the Reavers driving the truck take the opportunity to escape with the mutant prisoners in tow, but Logan quickly finds a motorcycle to chase them down with. A high-octane chase ensues, which ends with Logan crashing his bike onto one of the trucks and jumping (and slashing) his way across the convoy. At one point, he finds himself face-to-face with a taser-wielding Reaver that bears a striking resemblance to Cyberpunk 2077‘s Adam Smasher… but he too soon winds up being just more fodder for the Wolverine.
During this last encounter, we catch a glimpse of how Logan’s legendary healing factor works in Marvel’s Wolverine. Once Logan takes enough damage, the player has to mash the Square Button to heal his wounds and get him back into fighting form. After taking a few more shots (and a particularly nasty fall), Wolverine eventually makes his way to the truck with the captives… which he flips over with a wench before rescuing the shaken-but-grateful prisoners. The gameplay footage ends with Logan leaping toward even more Reaver transports, followed by a cut to the Marvel’s Wolverine logo.
The Mutants of Marvel’s Wolverine

We then see more images from Marvel’s Wolverine, and with them, a look at some of the other mutant characters along for the ride. In addition to Logan, Jean, and Leech, we catch a glimpse at the eyepatch-wearing Morlock leader Callisto, as well as the previously confirmed Mystique and Omega Red. New to Marvel’s Wolverine is Sabretooth, Logan’s longtime enemy, who infamously has all of his animalistic rage and none of his morals.
Marvel’s Wolverine is now available to pre-order on the official PlayStation Store website, and those who buy the game ahead of its September 15 release date will get access to the alternate Classic Brown suit and Reflective Claws alongside an additional Technique Point and four special PS Avatars. There’s also the Marvel’s Wolverine Deluxe Edition, which includes all that in addition to five more exclusive skins (Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, and New Leather), five exclusive Claws (Smooth-Edged Claws, Hollow Blade Claws, Thick Claws, Serrated Spine Claws, and Tapered Claws), and three more Technique Points.
Update: 6-2-26 8:00 PM ET
Insomniac Games’ creative director Marcus Smith shared some more story and gameplay information about Marvel’s Wolverine with Variety after the PlayStation State of Play. In the world of Marvel’s Wolverine, the X-Men don’t exist yet, with Logan being part of a mutant-protecting group called Team X. While Logan is shown taking some grisly damage in the recent gameplay footage, he can die if his heart stops in the heat of battle – though adrenaline and rage can restart it. Lastly, anyone put off by the amount of blood and gore will be able to take on a less-violent path or disable the blood altogether in the accessibility options.
