The weather is warming up, the sun is shining, and it is the perfect time to grab your favorite book and head outside. We are big readers in this house, and my five-year-old is currently obsessed with the Dragon Masters series by Tracey West. We often find ourselves sprawled on a blanket dappled by the shade of a dogwood tree, enjoying the adventures that Drake and his Earth Dragon find themselves in the middle of. However, the one thing that would make these sweet memories even more fun is pizza – and the Book It! Summer Reading Program is ready to deliver.
As a heavy reader who grew up in the late 90s and early 00s, the Book It Summer Reading Program was a staple of my summer. While my memories included the newest Anne McCaffrey books and a paper form, the modern equivalent is much more tech-savvy. The paper list has been replaced with an app that parents can manage from their phones.
Set Your Goals And Get Reading
As explained in a social media post shared by the official Book It Program account, enrollment for the 2026 summer program begins on May 1st. The program will run from June 1 through August 31, 2026. During this time, readers have the chance to meet a goal each month for a certificate that awards one free personal pizza from Pizza Hut.
The program is open to children Pre-k through 6th Grade, and parents have the ability to set the goals for their children. The goals range from 20 minutes to 60 minutes a day.
Setting up the app was seamless for my family. I was able to download the app, set my son’s goals up, and add my personal information without an issue. The program is free, making it a great option for my family as we navigate the turbulent economy.
One thing that really stands out in the program is the options. Instead of requiring children to read a specific number of books, they are challenged to read in time frames. This is much more accessible, especially for late-start readers or children who may struggle to click in when the sun is teasing them to go jump on the playground equipment.
In an area where so many kids are locked onto their screens, it is very exciting to see a nostalgic program like Book It encouraging our children to nurture their imaginations and relax away from algorithms. I know I’ll be joining my son this summer in his reading challenge, and I’ll be very excited to take him for his pizza because I know he is going to knock it out of the park.
