Earlier this week, developer Respawn Entertainment gave us a cheeky look at the brand new Legend joining Apex Legends in Season 29: Overclocked, Axle. Today, I’m pleased to be able to report all the details of not only this new playable character, but a mechanic coming to the game with this season that will blow it wide open.
When I say I’ve not been this excited about Apex Legends since the game was initially released in 2019, I really mean it. We’re poised to see the fan base, which has been steadily growing throughout Season 28, hit on something that completely changes the team dynamics and could have a huge impact on ALGS.
Before we dive in, it’s important to know that Season 29 encompasses a lot more than these two core details. The ALGS Split 1 Playoffs take place while it’s live, and Respawn Entertainment is hitting anti-cheat as hard as it possibly can. The developer is working harder on the game’s community than ever before, so applaud them for their efforts as you enjoy seamless games and world-class eSports this season.
Everything You Need To Know About Axle In Apex Legends

Axle is a speedster in every sense of the word. Her backstory sees her racing in Redline, a sort of battle royale but for motorcycle racing, following in the footsteps of her parents. It’s how she got into the games, and it’s also how she lost her leg.
What she lacks in that leg, she more than makes up for in movement, though, with a passive called Drift that increases her slide control. This grants increased precision in those key moments when you’re rushing to get to or from cover to gain an advantage.
Coupled with this passive is Axle’s Tactical, Nitro Gate. It’s a throwable object that launches her and any other Legends that use it into high-speed slides so that you can close gaps with cover or enemies faster and make more aggressive plays. This will also work incredibly well for those Deathbox Respawns I’ll tell you about below.
No Legend is viable without a good Ultimate, and Axle’s, named Kickstart, seems to be pretty great. She’s joining Crypto with a drone, except hers, once launched, will seek out enemies and explode on impact. This could be incredible, provided the drone isn’t easy to shoot down. I like the idea of holding onto the Ultimate until you’re pinned down before popping it to create an opening for chaos in which to escape.
Overall, I love how Axle sounds on paper. I actually think she could really mix up what we see in the upcoming ALGS tournament, too. She creates many unpredictable moments in whatever situation you find yourself, and that unpredictability is what will throw a lot of pro teams off.
Deathbox Respawns

This is a feature I’ve wanted for years. At long last, you’ll be able to revive a teammate from their deathbox in the middle of a match. This means no more chasing down beacons within the time limit or crafting what you need to bring a full team back into the field. Just hold out long enough for the revive option to become available, and you’re good to go.
This isn’t a feature that’ll make it easier to play, though, not by a long shot. You see, while the initial respawn time will be seven seconds, it’s going to increase with every death a player takes. If you die too often, you’ll just be a liability, and that makes you extremely hard to bother bringing back into the game.
I think you can see how this could impact ALGS, moving a lot of plays to focus on holding a spot before moving on and adjusting tactics on the fly. It’ll also somehow add much more tension to those final circles, when teams pin each other down and wait for those last few seconds before making a move.
The thing is, I don’t know if this will be in ALGS games. I could believe that it would be kept out for the integrity of the tournament, at least for now, and it’s no secret that ALGS uses a custom build of Apex Legends for various reasons. However, I can’t deny that I’d love to see Deathbox Respawns in ALGS just to give every team something new to think about and a brand new challenge on their hands.
