Growing up in the 90s (or as some of the staff at the coffee shop I work in like to call it, the 1900’s), Nintendo‘s Game Boy was riding high as the most popular handheld gaming device in the world.
30 years later, Nintendo has advanced the handheld industry quite a bit, but we oldies still remember the incredible days of playing Pokémon Red and Blue when they were first released. Well, I’m incredibly pleased to report that there are still quite a few developers making games for the device in 2026, and you can get your hands on a bundle of them right now.
Transport Yourself Back In Time With The Handheld Heritage Bundle
I’m, understandably, a big fan of modern Game Boy games. I’ve picked up a few that have had physical versions produced on Kickstarter or just for a limited release. I love the feel of the cartridges and putting them into my extremely old Game Boy to play them now and then when I want to feel that hit of nostalgia.
The Handheld Heritage Bundle doesn’t have any physical cartridges to offer, but you are able to put the games onto a cartridge that’ll run on the Game Boy, should you choose to do so. It contains 30 modern Game Boy games, built by developers who love the platform for its charm and its limitations.
This is far from all the modern Game Boy games out there, but it gives you a taste of some of the best. It covers multiple genres from developers all around the world who work together to help each other work around the minuscule memory of cartridges and tough-to-handle graphical capabilities.
It’s the limitations that breed innovation, though. The Game Boy was so popular that it had just about everything made for it as a peripheral, including a fishing sonar, an unreleased pager/smartphone cradle, and someone even crammed the entire Bible into a game at one time.
The bundle costs $29.99 and packs in enough games for you to play one per day and never get bored. Please give these a go, especially if you’re like me and loved your Game Boy. These titles are all interesting, quirky, and full of love and imagination, brimming with marvels that you just don’t get in AAA game development.
