There have been whispers of a Venom-centric Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 spin-off since the game’s launch in 2023, but recent developments are casting doubt on the project. Insomniac had been hinting at the arrival of Spidey’s symbiote nemesis as far back as its first Spider-Man game, and two Marvel titles later, Harry Osborn finally became the monstrous Venom – even being playable for a brief snippet.
That snippet left fans excited at the idea of playing as Venom for an entire Insomniac-developed game, and sure enough, the now-infamous 2023 Insomniac data breach included such a project among the developer’s reported pipeline. However, this supposed Venom spin-off was never officially announced, and now it might not be released after all.
Miles Morales Actor Says The Venom Spin-Off Is Cancelled
Nadji Jeter, the talented actor who voiced Miles Morales in the previous Marvel’s Spider-Man games and some other projects, recently spoke with the Love it Film podcast about the long-rumored Venom title. He says that it was indeed going to happen (and maybe a Venom-focused DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), but the passing of Tony Todd (who provided Venom’s spine-chilling growls and whispers) in 2024 led to these projects being scrapped.
Insomniac has yet to comment on Jeter’s claims, but they soon spread across social media and eventually caught the attention of gaming journalist Jason Schreier. He would weigh in on a ResetEra thread about Jeter’s comments, and simply countered that “This isn’t true.” As of this writing, Schreier hasn’t elaborated further about whether or not Insomniac’s supposed Venom game was cancelled.
Now, keep in mind that Insomniac never officially announced a Venom spin-off, but I, for one, would welcome the prospect of tearing through New York as the Lethal Protector. After all, rampaging through 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man post-game was a fun time. On one hand, Jason Schreier has proven himself to be a reliable insider in the gaming industry, but on the other, Nadji Jeter is personally involved in the Insomniac Spider-Man games.
In the meantime, Insomniac is expanding its Marvel universe later this year with Marvel’s Wolverine, which is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 on September 15.
