There have been plenty of big Marvel video games released over the past few years, with many more in active development. However, one recently leaked project looks like it might bring the free-to-play, multiplayer antics of Marvel Rivals to an open-world sandbox on PC and mobile. This game is tentatively titled “Project COMET,” and some basic details were leaked online a few months ago.
According to these possible leaks, “Project COMET” is being developed for iOS and Android devices as a free-to-play multiplayer game similar to Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact. It is said to feature a mix of classic Marvel heroes, each with their own special skills and abilities, divided into gatcha game-style rarity tiers, as well as four-player co-op missions across various Marvel environments. The art style is being actively compared to Marvel Rivals, and the gameplay is also said to share some similarities with the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series of the 2000s.
Marvel’s Rumored “Project COMET” Could Be The Next Superhero Hit
Now an actual trailer for “Project COMET” has been discovered on the Chinese video-sharing site Bilibili, as shared by Twitter user SargeOp. They also shared a few more bullet points about the game, verifying that it will be a free-to-play, open-world action RPG, as well as noting that it will feature cross-play support between PC and mobile users. When asked about this last bit, SargeOp shared a screenshot from a job listing at Scopely (“Project COMET’s” reported developer) that mentions needing someone who can “bring together the art and science” of the mobile and PC gaming communities.
As for the trailer itself, it’s pretty clear that “Project COMET” is taking influence from Marvel Rivals right off the bat with its cel-shaded graphics and stylized character models. A narrator mentions that the Fantastic Four have vanished after defeating the planet-devouring Galactus, leaving the Marvel Universe in need of a new team of heroes to defend it against the various villains that have risen in the void.
Answering this call are classic Marvel characters like Elektra, War Machine, The Punisher, Wolverine (fresh off his most recent headline game), Doctor Strange, Black Widow, and Spider-Man. Each one springs into action using flashy special attacks against equally iconic foes like The Blob and Silver Samurai amid armies of faceless goons. Eagle-eyed Marvel fans might also spot some famous locales like the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters and what appears to be the future world of 2099.
This all looks interesting, but keep in mind that it’s still based on leaked rumors and incomplete gameplay footage – so it is all subject to change for the time being. That being said, Marvel Rivals has been a big hit with the online gaming community, and building off that success with an open-world Marvel experience could be a winning formula. True believers should keep their eyes peeled for any future developments – not the least of which is what “Project COMET” would actually be called.
Still here? Good.
