Spider-Man has been in numerous fighting games, and Marvel‘s friendly-neighborhood webslinger is swinging into Invincible VS… or rather, his copyright-compliant stand-in Agent Spider. Indeed, the ol’ Webhead has seen his fair share of gaming appearances and crossovers, such as the beloved Marvel Vs. Capcom series and this year’s own Marvel Tokon: Fighting Spirit.
Spidey’s penchant for teaming-up with (or fighting) other icons of the printed page go way beyond that though. One of his more out-of-left-field cameos came in the pages of Invincible #33, where a dimension-hopping Mark Grayson was briefly transported to Marvel’s Earth-616 in time to catch Spider-Man in a battle with Doctor Octopus. Fast forward a couple of decades to Amazon’s acclaimed Invincible animated series, where the writers were faced with a conundrum when the time came to adapt that issue without walking into the legal quagmire that is Spider-Man’s adaptation rights.
The answer? Create a brand-new character named Agent Spider, virtually identical to the other guy in terms of abilities and personality. Amazon even got Josh Keaton, who famously voiced Spider-Man in The Spectacular Spider-Man and Marvel Tokon among other things, to play this Agent Spider, who bumps into Mark while battling his arch nemesis Professor Ock. No relation to anyone else…
Spider-Ma… I Mean, Agent Spider… Is Coming To Invincible VS
Now Agent Spider is swinging into Invincible VS (the fighting game based on the Invincible show) as part of the ongoing Year 1 DLC. As shown in the corresponding YouTube announcement trailer, Invincible is knocked into Agent Spider’s dimension during a battle with the vengeful Angstrom Levy – prompting the copyright-friendly neighborhood hero to take charge with his suspiciously familiar-looking web powers. Agent Spider will be added in Winter 2026.
Just like in his appearance in the show, Josh Keaton is on hand to provide that classic Agent Spider humor, and the trailer naturally contains a few tongue-in-cheek nods to who Agent Spider is supposed to represent. The YouTube comments section, in turn, is filled with jokes about Agent Spider pulling off a legally distinct version of Spider-Man’s “Maximum Spider” move from the Marvel Vs. Capcom games and Omni-Man (who just so happens to be voiced by JK Simmons) demanding pictures of Agent Spider or calling him a menace to society.
Might be a bit hypocritical with that last one, but I digress…
Agent Spider is already pretty popular with Invincible fans, and some modders have even added his costume to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for reasons I can’t comprehend. In any case, Agent Spider is finally ready to make his first official and gaming appearance in Invincible VS sometime this winter, where he will surely honor the words of his late… uh, father? About superhuman abilities and the moral obligation to use them for the greater good?
Something like that…
Still here? Good.
