There’s a lot for comic fans to like about the upcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, including the fact that its single-player story campaign was written by Kieron Gillen – a longtime comic scribe with his own gaming history. Developed by acclaimed fighting game studio Arc System Works, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls combines the vibrant, anime-style action of BlazeBlue and Dragon Ball Fighter Z with the iconic heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe as they throw down in 4-v-4 combat to determine the fate of the world.
Much of the hype surrounding Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls stems from its character roster, which is split into five teams of four like-minded superhumans. Among these teams are the Amazing Guardians (consisting of both versions of Spider-Man, Star-Lord, and Ms. Marvel), Fighting Avengers (a mighty collaboration of Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Hulk), Knights of Doom (Doctor Doom leads a rag-tag team of supervillains like Carnage, the Green Goblin, and Magneto), Samurai Outriders (Blade, Deadpool, Ghost Rider, and Loki), and the Unbreakable X-Men (Danger, Storm, Magik, and Wolverine).
Kieron Gillen Wrote Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ Episode Mode
These teams are front and center in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls‘ single-player story campaign, which is called Episode Mode and is helmed by a name that modern comic readers might recognize. Kieron Gillen has previously penned several Uncanny X-Men comics, including some set during the Krakoan Age that saw Marvel’s mutants build their own society on a living island. Some of his other Marvel work includes Journey into Mystery, Young Avengers (for which he won a GLAAD Media Award), and even multiple Star Wars books.
His output for The House of Ideas makes Kieron Gillen an interesting fit Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, but he has also cut his teeth writing about video games for outlets like The Escapist, Wired, and Eurogamer, among others. Gillen has also spoken at numerous gaming conferences and even co-founded the British gaming website Rock Paper Shotgun in 2007.
This, of course, just scratches the surface of Kieron Gillen’s work in the fields of comics and video game journalism, which will combine when Marvel Tokon: Fighting Spirit launches on August 6. His storyline for the Episode Mode will play out across five different chapters, each one following one of Marvel Tokon‘s superhero teams and animated by a different artist.
