The X-Men are all about teamwork, and a new rumor suggests that Insomniac’s X-Men game could feature multiple playable characters. As far back as the 2023 Insomniac data breach, there has been word that the developer is working on a game centered around Marvel’s merry Mutants, with the recent Marvel’s Wolverine serving as a potential launchpad for Earth-1048’s take on the X-Men.
Sure enough, Marvel’s Wolverine ended with mutants being exposed to the larger world, and there are plenty of hints toward famous X-Men members throughout the game. At the very least, we can expect to see Logan reunite with Jean Grey to lead a team of mutant protectors, but that only raises the question of who players will be controlling in Insomniac’s long-rumored X-Men title.
Insomniac X-Men Rumor Hints At Multiple Playable Heroes
A new report from Insider Gaming suggests that players could control more than one hero in Insomniac’s X-Men game, stemming from a recent batch of job listings at the developer. One of these listings is for a Staff Hero Designer, who will reportedly “drive the creative vision, gameplay design, and execution quality of new playable hero characters,” and take “creative leadership and primary ownership of player character systems for one or more playable characters” among other duties.
While this job listing doesn’t directly mention Insomniac’s X-Men game, the multiple mentions of “playable characters” (as in plural) seem to indicate that this Staff Hero Designer would be working on that particular project. Of course, this could just as well be a reference to Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, which will no doubt feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the starring role once again. Assuming that this is for a Marvel game at all…
The Insomniac job listings also mention an “ally” system of some kind, meaning that the new X-Men game could take a page from the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance series and allow non-playable X-Men to follow and support the player – or even let them switch between heroes at will. This is all just rumor and speculation at this point, but the data breach did say that Insomniac’s X-Men game could launch sometime around 2030 if all goes according to plan.
Still here? Good.
