EA might have a new Star Wars Battlefront planned after all, with DICE set to return as developer alongside Star Wars Jedi: Survivor studio Respawn. The last entry in the beloved Star Wars Battlefront series was DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront II, which launched in late 2017 in time for the release of Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. It was initially met with division among series fans due to its microtransactions and publisher EA’s infamous attempts to defend them (to say nothing of the governments in multiple countries speaking out on the subject), but Star Wars Battlefront II would eventually build a solid reputation after an about-face and a wealth of post-launch content.
However, the game’s initial sales still fell short of EA’s expectations, and ultimately the planned third DICE-developed Star Wars Battlefront game was scrapped to allow the studio to focus on its own Battlefield franchise. This hasn’t stopped gamers who have since fallen in love with Star Wars Battlefront II from demanding a follow-up, with a petition from last summer reaching over 17,000 signatures.
DICE And Respawn Are Reportedly Working On A New Star Wars Battlefront
Now their cries for a new Star Wars Battlefront game could finally be answered, according to the same Variety article that broke the unfortunate news of BioWare being shut down. A bright spot on an otherwise dreary report is that EA is impressed with the success of Battlefield 6 and is looking to work with DICE on more projects in the near future. One of these is said to be a collaboration with Respawn, the studio behind the recent Star Wars Jedi series.
EA hasn’t identified this new project yet, but multiple sources say that it is indeed a Star Wars Battlefront sequel. Earlier this week, there were rumors of a new Battlefront, with sources claiming that EA could be looking to switch development duties over to Bungie, the fabled developer behind the original Halo trilogy, Destiny, and Marathon.
Star Wars Battlefront would have certainly fit in Bungie’s wheelhouse, but it looks like DICE is going to return to the series after all. As noted before, Respawn has plenty of experience in the Galaxy Far, Far, Away, as both Star Wars Jedi games have been praised as some of the best single-player Star Wars titles in quite some time.
This is all good news regardless, as we haven’t had a new Star Wars Battlefront in roughly nine years. We’re due. In the meantime, Star Wars gaming fans like myself have been enjoying a double feature this year in the form of Star Wars: Zero Company and Star Wars: Galactic Racer, both of which I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing here at Bonus Action.
Still here? Good.
