The Nintendo Switch 2 is building up an impressive line-up of Final Fantasy ports and remakes, and Square Enix has recently suggested that 2016’s Final Fantasy 15 could join them someday in the form of a “remake.” Like Final Fantasy 7 before it, Final Fantasy 15 brought the long-running JRPG franchise to a more modern-day setting where magic and technology go hand-in-hand. A young prince named Noctis and his royal entourage embark on a road trip that soon becomes a quest to save the world of Eos from darkness.
Many of the classic Final Fantasy games are already playable on Nintendo’s latest console thanks to backward compatibility with the original Switch, and both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have been brought to the Switch 2 earlier this year. Switch 2 owners won’t have to wait longer for the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga to hit their consoles, as Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch across all systems simultaneously in Spring 2027 – Switch 2 included.
Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy 15 Switch 2 “Remake”
In the meantime, there are still a few more Final Fantasy titles the Switch 2 doesn’t have yet, and one of them was recently brought up during a Square Enix shareholders meeting (as reported by Final Weapon). During this meeting, someone asked about the possibility of a Final Fantasy 7 Remake port for the original Switch or a proper remake of Final Fantasy 15 for the Switch 2. According to translations from Twitter users like Cammy Dalamund and 3Dburn, the Square Enix shareholders stated that there might be some “hardware constraints,” but that it isn’t completely impossible and that the company is at least considering these ideas.
A direct Final Fantasy 15 port was originally planned for the original Nintendo Switch early in the console’s lifespan, but it would ultimately be scrapped due to hardware limitations and a lack of native Switch support for Square Enix’s proprietary Luminous Engine. Instead, the Switch received a port of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition (a scaled-down mobile version that removed the open world elements and re-rendered Noctis and company as smaller chibi versions not unlike the characters in the original Final Fantasy 7) in September 2018.
To this day, Final Fantasy 15 has a mixed reputation among die-hard RPG fans, but there are still quite a few gamers who would love to play the original version on a portable system like the Nintendo Switch 2. While Square Enix hasn’t outright confirmed that a Final Fantasy 15 Switch 2 remake is happening after Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, it hasn’t shot down the possibility either. Who knows, this might just be the perfect road trip game someday…
