God of War Laufey was one of the bigger surprises to come out of this year’s Summer Game Fest season, but it turns out Santa Monica Studios’s upcoming spin-off was in the works for nearly a decade. Throughout 2018’s God of War reboot, players were told of Faye, Kratos’s second wife and Atreus’s mother, whose death and final wishes served as the emotional backbone of the game’s plot. Then, 2022’s God of War Ragnarok gave us flashbacks of Faye in the flesh, brought to life by Daredevil: Born Again star Deborah Ann Woll.
There had been rumors of a new God of War game being unveiled during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play livestream, and sure enough, the event concluded with a stunning trailer for God of War Laufey. Set during the events of the last two mainline God of War titles, Laufey puts players in control of Faye as she awakens from her death in the Everywhen, an afterlife filled with fallen deities, and must work alongside new allies to help Kratos and Atreus fulfill the prophecy she devoted the end of her life to bring to pass.
Deborah Ann Woll Was First Told Of God of War Laufey In 2018

Deborah Ann Woll took to the stage at the recent Game Con Canada, where she shared some interesting information about God of War Laufey. As reported by CGMagazine, she said that she was first told that Faye would get her own spin-off title back in 2018, around the time that the first Norse-based God of War was released. Cory Barlog and the rest of Santa Monica Studios were planning the project even before then, and Woll says that the latter already had a poster depicting Faye and Phranque – the cube-like being that will assist her on her new journey.
Woll also shared how she felt while performing the voice and motion-capture work for God of War Laufey, which only took a couple of years in comparison to the larger game development effort by Santa Monica Studios. She said that she was just as impressed as everyone else when she first saw Laufey‘s action-packed trailer, which shows Faye living up to all of the stories Kratos and others told about her in the previous God of War installments.
God of War Laufey is currently set to launch for the PlayStation 5 sometime next year. This won’t be the only new God of War project on the horizon either, as Amazon’s live-action adaptation of 2018’s God of War is said to be premiering on Amazon Prime Video at some point in the near future. Additionally, Santa Monica Studio is working on a current-gen remake of the original God of War trilogy, meaning that fans will get to re-experience Kratos’s saga from before he first met Faye.
