A notable leaker might have revealed new details about the next Sonic the Hedgehog game. The Sonic franchise has been on a bit of a hot streak over the past few years, thanks in no small part to the very successful live-action movies. Gaming-wise, the past few years have seen the releases of Sonic X Shadow Generations and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, both of which have been received warmly by fans.
The most recent mainline Sonic the Hedgehog game, 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, shook up the formula of Sega’s hyper-fast platforming mascot by introducing an open-world framework and putting a stronger emphasis on emotional plot and character development. The result was largely successful, and recent rumors suggest that Sega could be even more ambitious for the inevitable follow-up.
New Sonic Game Could Come Out In 2027
A new report from industry insider V Scooper contains some major leaks for the next Sonic game, which they claim is being targeted for a 2027 release. According to V Scooper, this new game won’t be a direct sequel to Sonic Frontiers, nor will it be a remake of an older title like the original Sonic Adventure, as many have speculated.
V Scooper says that this next mainline Sonic game could be the biggest original title in the series to date, with an even stronger focus on story and a larger cast of playable characters. This will certainly be welcome news for fans who have missed being able to play as other characters besides Sonic himself in recent games, especially after Sonic Frontiers‘ Final Horizon DLC allowed them to explore the Starfall Islands as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.
There aren’t a whole lot of other details available at this time, and V Scooper isn’t ready to say if this new Sonic game will have any live-service elements. The budget isn’t clear either, but V Scooper says that Sega is looking to support this new title long term, in part to capitalize on the ongoing live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie series.
Of course, none of this has been officially verified by Sega at this time, so fans should take everything here with a grain of salt until more substantial evidence presents itself. Personally, this all sounds pretty interesting, especially the claims that this new Sonic the Hedgehog game will utilize more of Sonic’s supporting cast. Perhaps this could include characters from the IDW-published Sonic the Hedgehog comics, since Tangle and Whisper recently got official voices in the Sonic Presents: The Chaotix Casefiles podcast.
In the meantime, Sonic movie fans can look forward to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 hitting theaters on March 19, 2027. The latest movie will see Kristen Bell join the cast as the voice of Amy Rose, as was confirmed earlier this week.
