Few things delight a book lover quite like a trip to their local independent bookstore. From personalized shelf-talkers with booksellers to those conversations about the reads we love and what to pick up next, indies are a key part of the local bookish community.
Each year on the last Saturday in April, readers are invited to celebrate their local indie with Independent Bookstore Day. This year’s Independent Bookstore Day falls on April 27, and many local bookstores are already gearing up for the event.
What is Independent Bookstore Day and How Do We Celebrate?
Independent Bookstore Day began with about 400 bookstores throwing book-related celebrations, and the event has steadily grown over the last 11 years. This year, over 1,000 bookstores across America have signed on to host a celebration of books and reading.
The last Saturday of April is the annual date for Independent Bookstore Day here in the US. On the day, bookstores host all kinds of events in person and online to celebrate their community and encourage them to stop by.
Celebrations often include giveaways of special Independent Bookstore Day merch like stickers and bookmarks, as well as sales and specials on books and bookish goodies. Many stores also host signings with local authors and storytime events for kids. Basically, it’s a big bookish party at your local indie bookstore!

Exclusive Independent Bookstore Day merch includes mugs, shirts, and totes with the slogan “The Future is Indie” and there are plenty of treats for children, including coloring books and comics. What each store will have on hand varies, as indies are encouraged to celebrate as they see fit.
Some items are available as free giveaways and prizes, while others might be for sale – since each store plans its own celebration, the details vary.
How To Find An Indie Bookstore Day Location Near You
How can you tell if your favorite local indie is participating? Many stores have already begun sharing info on their plans for the date via social media, so your local fave’s Instagram or the #IndieBookstoreDay is a great place to start.
IndieBound also has a searchable map of all bookstores who’ve formally signed up to participate, so you can scroll through to see all the stores near you. This is also a great way to find a new-to-you independent bookstore in your area.
