We love the Nintendo Switch 2 here at Bonus Action. It’s got a brilliant screen, awesome games, everything runs and looks a bit better on it, and the Joy-Con 2 is a far superior controller.

However, Nintendo has misstepped somewhat with the announcement of its first official new colors for the Joy-Con 2. It wouldn’t hurt so much if the controllers were more visibly differentiated from the base models, but a third-party company has stepped in to address the issue.

Don’t Get Scammed For Two Controllers When You Could Have Ten Times That

Okay, so what are these new Joy-Con 2’s I’m talking about? They’re the ones revealed alongside Mario Tennis Fever. This series is fabulous, and I’m very excited for the game, but I could definitely be more excited about the Joy-Con 2s Nintendo is launching with the latest entry.

The new Light Purple and Light Green controllers look good when not attached to your Switch 2, but they lose that pop of color when snapping to the console. All you see is a highlight around each joystick, and that isn’t enough to justify the price for me. If you’re a collector and these are a must-have, good for you, but in an economy where the price of basic groceries is soaring, I need more to justify the price of any gaming accessories.

That’s why it’s so poignant that Genki, a third-party hardware company, has launched its eighth Kickstarter campaign for brand new Switch 2 controller grips and cases. At the time of writing, there are only two colors for these grips, orange and turquoise, but there are six types of grips to mix and match colors with, and two new cases to attach to your Switch 2 as well.

With more colors as stretch goals, the combinations go way beyond what you have with official Nintendo Joy-Con 2 products, and it gets even better if you buy Genki’s battery pack. The extra power pack magnetically attaches to the new grip cases, so you can double the play time of your Switch 2 in no time.

Regardless of how many grips you get, the price difference is what should be the real draw here. For a mix-and-match kit with six grips and two new shells, you’ll pay $99. That’s the same price as the new Joy-Con 2s.

Genki, similar to Hori, is clearly the best option here in terms of value for money. You get way more options for customizing your console and can add more if you decide to buy the battery pack further down the line. Official products should always carry a higher price because they should be the highest available quality, but in this instance, Nintendo isn’t offering the kind of expression through accessories that Genki is, and I can’t help but feel that it’s a little out of touch.

Genki’s campaign has 31 days to go at the time of writing, so head over and pledge to secure your new grips and shell.
