When first getting started in Subnautica 2, players will have nothing more than a flare, a health pack, and the freshly obtained ability to withstand deep water pressure. Unfortunately, that isn’t going to be enough to survive. To acquire better gear, you will need to get your hands on key resources like Copper.
I accidentally stumbled on Copper while drowning in one of the shallow caves near my freshly surfaced pod. Until venturing into a dark hole in some rocks, I’d only found Quartz and Titanium. Neither was what I needed to craft Basic Batteries of Copper Wire.
After a second underwater cave attempt, I was able to confirm that Copper is hiding in these spooky crevices, and it will be a challenge to get some without running out of oxygen.
Where to Find Copper in Subnautica 2

Copper can be found inside caves near the surfaced pod in Subnautica 2. While this may seem straightforward, the caves are dark and tricky to navigate. Due to the finite amount of oxygen you have when getting started, you’ll need to prepare to dive in, stay oriented, and then get back out quickly. Dying will leave random items from your inventory on the cave floor.
We recommend taking a torch for light and picking a cave close to the surface. Dive in, and immediately look up at the walls and ceiling for nodes. Grab a few, and then duck back out for air. Try to avoid straying too far into the cave. It is easy to get turned around, and there isn’t much time to correct your direction when air runs out.
How to Craft with Copper

Copper is used in more advanced material crafting. This includes the Copper Wire and Basic Batteries. Copper Wire costs 2 Copper while the Basic Battery requires 2 Copper and 1 Acidic Raion Pouch.
The Basic Battery is a key material for crafting a Scanner, the key to unlocking blueprints and investigating the resources and lifeforms on the planet. Without the Scanner, gameplay will slow to a crawl. The Scanner should be one of the first major priorities after surfacing, after obtaining renewable food and water.
Once you have copper, drop it in storage for crafting needs in Subnautica 2. It is a resource that is worth keeping on hand as you continue to build out your base and explore.
