Life is off to a rocky start in Subnautica 2. From an overly friendly AI ‘guide’ who encourages you to locate dangerous situations to a general lack of supplies and tutorials, the first few hours of the game can be harrowing. This is especially true when trying to locate drinkable water.
If you are like me and took too long searching for the release hatches on the back of the life pod to reach the surface, you are going to step off parched. I found myself in a dire position, but obtaining drinkable water in Subnautica 2 requires only one material, and it is located right under your pod.
How to Make Water in Subnautica 2

Basic filtered water is required for living, and must be crafted at the fabrication table inside your pod in Subnautica 2. To get the recipe, interact with the fabrication table on the wall of your pod.

To craft the water, you will need 1 Water Slug. Once crafted, the water bottle can be consumed for +40 Hydration, which is enough to fill the hydration gauge at the start of the game.
After realizing how quickly the hydration gauge goes down while exploring, I started carrying two bottles of water with me at all times. I didn’t want to bog down my inventory, but there aren’t many ways to craft more water early in the game while on the go.
How to Get Water Slugs in Subnautica 2

To get Water Slugs in Subnautica 2, dive under the pod and search the sea floor. The slugs appear as teal and purple blobs that are easy to spot while swimming above the shallow biomes around the pod. They spawn in large quantities and don’t require harvesting tools.
The Water Slugs don’t expire. I would gather bundles of five and bring them back to the pod to turn into water. Doing so ensured that I always had a few bottles on hand. Just be sure not to accidentally eat the Slug. It must be crafted into a bottle of water to be useful. Otherwise, you’ll take a health penalty.
Once you have water on hand, exploring becomes safer and more enjoyable. Subnautica 2 has a dark and involved story, and it’s best to tackle it with plenty to drink.
