How Farming Works in Garden Witch Life – Basic Overview

The gardening system in Garden Witch Life is unique from many other farming sims. This makes it a lot of fun, but it can also take some time to learn. Here’s an overview of how things work to help you get to work!

Seasons & Seasonal Plants

Garden Witch Life follows a seasonal system, where each season has 28 days. However, many plants can grow in multiple seasons.

You can check which seasons a plant will grow in by hovering over the seeds in your inventory, or by inspecting the plants once you unlock the magnifying glass.

Most plants have many growing seasons, with only a few being limited to just a single season.

Getting Seeds

In Garden Witch Life, there are many ways to find new seeds to grow. You can buy seeds from Aurel at the General Store, but that’s not all!

Many seeds can be harvested in the wild by finding their plants in the wilderness around your home. You can also get seeds from your crops if you let them grow long enough to reach the seed stage.

The seeds available at the General Store and in the wild vary slightly by season, so be sure to stock up.

Planting Seeds & Companion Plant Mechanics

Unlike many farming games, you don’t till the soil in Garden Witch Life. Instead, simply select the seed you want to plant and hit “plant.” Then, you’ll choose where to place your seed. That’s where things get interesting.

Each plant has a circle around it that shows its radius of energy across its life cycle. As you move the plant around, you’ll notice that the inner circle changes colors. This shows you how that plant will interact with those around it.

A blue circle means the plants have a beneficial relationship. They’ll grow better when placed near one another’s sphere of influence. Try to plot your garden with as many beneficial plant relationships as possible for the best results!

A pink circle on the other hand means that they plants will work against one another. It’s best to avoid planting something near a red circle if you can.

There are also purple circles that seem to suggest an even stronger positive relationship between the plant companions.

Healing Your Soil

At first, you’ll try fertilizer from the General Store to enrich your depleted soil. However, your journal notes something about it doesn’t seem right.

A mysterious new friend will appear and tell you that what you really need is compost, created from the overabundance of Crystal Wheat plants in the area. Build yourself a composter and get to work making compost that you can add to your soil.

Add plant matter from using the scythe on various plants to make compost. You can also compost other plants, such as clover leaf.

This enriches the environment and helps keep crops happy as they grow. Over time, your soil will require less compost to remain healthy as the plants and land work together.

As your soil becomes healthier, you’ll also start to attract animal friends to your garden! You can pet and befriend the animals and even feed them to encourage them to stick around.

Inspecting Your Crops

After a few hours of gameplay, you’ll acquire a helpful new tool – a magical magnifying glass!

You can use this to inspect your crops. This will bring up an information box with a ton of helpful information, including its growing seasons, what stage of growth the plant is in, what it will yield in current and future stages, and more.

I suggest using this feature as you plan your harvest since each plant has a different yield depending on its stage. Harvest a sunflower too early and you’ll only get its leaves, whereas leaving sage until the last moment gets you sage flowers and sage leaves.

TIP: You can also use the inspect option on animals like snails and frogs to see their friendship level and hunger.

Harvesting Crops

As mentioned above, your crops will be harvestable at multiple stages during their growth cycle. Many crops have different outputs depending on when you harvest them.

For instance, many herbs can be harvested early for the herb itself, or left to grow further to get a flower along with the herb. Many plants will also yield more seeds if left to the end of their growth cycle.

Some plants, like tomatoes, dandelions, and sage, can be harvested multiple times. Others, like nettle leaf, can only be harvested once per plant.
