The long-awaited Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is nearly upon us, and Google is celebrating with a nostalgic Easter Egg that truly sends users to the past. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time, and the announcement that Nintendo would be releasing an updated remake for the Switch 2 this year was met with applause by those who grew up playing this seminal adventure – as well as a few like me who missed out on it the first time.
In addition to a new visual style, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time‘s newest incarnation will sport features like motion controls, a jump button to replace the original’s automatic leaps, and the fully voiced cutscenes that were added to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. These new bells and whistles may bring Ocarina of Time closer to more modern entries in the Zelda series, but the classic story of Link journeying across time to save Hyrule from the wicked Ganondorf will remain the same.
Google Is Letting Zelda Fans Search Like It’s 1998
Time travel playing such a big part in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time hasn’t been lost on Google, as the search engine we all know and use has added a fun new Easter Egg to celebrate the upcoming remake. If you search for “The Legend of Zelda” or something containing those words, a Master Sword will appear in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. Clicking it will trigger an animation and sound, then you will be transported to an older version of the Google search page from 1998 – complete with grey boxes and a more scaled-back list of links.
Clicking on the Master Sword again (which now resembles the blockier version seen on the N64) will take you back to the modern-day Google page. There isn’t really anything more to this, but it is a fun little nod to the original game’s late-90s release, a time when the internet was much simpler and gamers needed to wait for their AOL dial tone to finish before they could look up how to navigate the Water Temple.
There is no word on how long Google will keep this time-warping Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Easter Egg active, and it sadly only affects a single page of Zelda search results. Still, fans of Ocarina of Time ought to check it out at least once, if only for the reminder of how far things have come since the original game came out nearly 30 years ago. As for the modern remake, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5th.
Still here? Good.
