Fresh off his big-screen debut in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Fox McCloud is making a comeback on the Nintendo Switch 2 in the form of a Star Fox 64 remake. Fox’s appearance in Mario’s latest movie was a big surprise for many, given how there hasn’t been a new Star Fox game for several years.
Naturally, Fox’s scene-stealing showing had gamers speculating that Nintendo was planning to announce a new Star Fox game in the near future, just like how Donkey Kong’s supporting role in The Super Mario Bros Movie eventually led to Donkey Kong Bananaza rocking the Nintendo Switch 2 as one of its first exclusives. Now eager Star Fox fans have their announcement, and while it isn’t a completely new game, it will still mark the return of Fox and crew to Nintendo consoles.
Star Fox Looks Better Than Ever On Switch 2
From out of nowhere, Nintendo announced a special Star Fox-centric Direct livestream that went live on May 6, 2026, during which series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo executive officer Yoshiaki Koizumi revealed that a current-gen remake of 1997’s Star Fox 64 will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. Simply titled Star Fox, this update will tell the story of Fox McCloud and the rest of the Star Fox mercenary team as they defend the Lylat system from evil forces.
As shown in gameplay and cutscene footage during the recent Star Fox Direct, this new Star Fox 64 remake will feature vastly upgraded visuals that make the characters and worlds more vivid than ever before. Star Fox will also take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 by including online multiplayer and co-op for up to four players, mouse targeting, the ability to have one player steer Fox’s Arwing with one Joy-Con while a partner aims with another, and even animated avatars for use in GameChat.
Fans have been anxiously awaiting a new Star Fox game ever since the release of Star Fox 2 back in 2017, and this new remake looks like an exciting way for gamers to relive Fox McCloud’s early days either all over again or for the very first time. Best of all, you won’t have to wait much longer to play it, as Star Fox will launch on the Switch 2 on June 25, 2026. It will be the third Star Fox 64 remake, coming after Star Fox 64 3D for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 and Star Fox Zero for the Wii U in 2016.
