Roger Craig Smith, the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog himself, recently hinted at a project being announced at an upcoming IGN event. Smith took on the role of Sega’s speedy platforming mascot starting with 2010’s Sonic Free Riders, and he is currently the longest-running voice actor to play the Blue Blur.
In fact, the only recent Sonic the Hedgehog media to not feature Roger Craig Smith in the titular role have been the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which have Ben Schwartz taking up Sonic’s speedy running shoes, and the Netflix animated series Sonic Prime, in which Deven Mack voices the legendary gaming hero.
Sonic VA Roger Craig Smith Teases IGN News
Smith recently spoke with Variety about, among other things, his nearly two-decade run as Sonic the Hedgehog and what it means to him. At one point, he revealed that he is set to appear at IGN Live, which will run in Los Angeles from June 6-7. Of course, he can’t reveal anything specific, but Smith says that he is really excited to be a part of the big event and that this is a great time to be a Sonic fan.
It’s worth noting that this year marks the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which adds to the possibility that Roger Craig Smith will announce a new game or another big project, though nothing is known for sure yet. Earlier this year, a leaker claimed that Sega is working on a new Sonic game, one that will supposedly be the largest and most ambitious title in the series to date.
This rumored Sonic game is reportedly being targeted for a 2027 release date, which would put it around the same time frame as the fourth live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Given that the past few Sonic films have coincided with new games like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations, it would make sense to have a new title launch close to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 next year.
Keep in mind that all Roger Craig Smith has said so far is that he will be present at IGN Live this June, and might not be involved in a new Sonic announcement at all. In more official news, Smith will lend his voice to Raphael in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City VR game – and this makes him the third Sonic voice actor to also play a Ninja Turtle. (Ben Schwartz and Jason Griffith are the other two, for those keeping score.)
Update: Roger Craig Smith recently followed up with a post on Twitter, clarifying that his Variety comments were meant to describe IGN Live as a whole rather than a specific announcement that may or may not take place.
