There’s just something about pixel art that feels extra cozy. So, it’s no surprise that many of the most exciting cozy games on the horizon feature a pixel art style. But a stunning look alone doesn’t set a game apart these days. You also need an interesting premise, something for players to grasp onto. In the case of the upcoming Kickstarter project The Spirit Apprentice, that hook is its magical spirit-centric gameplay. I’ve been watching this one from the sidelines for a while, and I’m excited to see that the creator recently dropped a new trailer in the lead-up to the cozy game’s official Kickstarter launch.
The Spirit Apprentice is inspired by East Asian folklore and Studio Ghibli vibes. With its emphasis on spirits and tea, it reminds me of one of my favorite cozy games in recent years, Spirittea. However, though it may have some familiar elements, this is shaping up to be quite a unique game all its own. The latest trailer has me all the more excited for this game, which will launch its Kickstarter campaign on October 6th.
The Spirit Apprentice Offers a Fantasy Story in a Cozy, Pixel-Art World

This upcoming fantasy RPG comes from Moss and Moon Studio, a new indie game developer. The Spirit Apprentice has been under development for two years, and it’s now getting ready for the next stage: a crowdfunding campaign. I’ve been following the devs on Twitter for a while, eager to see more of the gorgeous pixel art and spirit magic concept. The account frequently shows little snippets of animation and tidbits about the world that Moss and Moon Studio is building in The Spirit Apprentice. It’s billed as a “cozy indie game full of magic” and everything we’ve seen so far certainly makes that seem accurate.
In The Spirit Apprentice, players will step into the role of a young spirit apprentice working to restore balance to a village plagued with dark magic. You’ll befriend the local villagers and tame the various Spirits who call this world home. Not all Spirits are friendly, however, so you’ll be tasked with defending yourself against darker Spirits as well. Along the way, you’ll meet various NPCs, some of whom might even become more than friends.
In the lead-up to the game’s Kickstarter campaign, The Spirit Apprentice just got a brand-new gameplay trailer. In it, we get a look at the game’s magical world of Móshù, brought to life in beautiful pixel art form. The trailer also showcases the game’s decoration mechanic, where players will be able to customize their very own Spirit Garden. You can check out the latest trailer for The Spirit Apprentice below:
The Spirit Apprentice is currently available to wishlist on Steam. You can also follow the game’s upcoming Kickstarter campaign if you want to be notified when the crowdfunding campaign goes live on October 6th. Since the game is still very much in development, we don’t yet have a release window. However, I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this one, because it looks right up my alley.
Still here? Good.
