Metro is officially back, with Deep Silver and 4A Games revealing Metro 2039 as the title of the next mainline entry in the post-apocalyptic shooter series. The newly announced game will get its full global showcase on April 16, with Xbox confirming the reveal as part of Xbox First Look.

Adapted from Dmitry Glukhovsky’s series of novels, Metro is developer 4A Games’ first-person survival shooter franchise set in post-nuclear Russia. First established in 2010 with Metro 2033, the series has built a reputation for its bleak survival horror tone, subterranean setting, and the constant pressure of scavenging for filters, ammo, and small moments of hope.

Metro 2039 is The Series’s First New Mainline Game in Years

Metro Exodus, the last mainline entry, released on Feb. 15, 2019, making Metro 2039 the first newly announced core Metro game in more than seven years. With Exodus taking the franchise beyond the confines of Moscow’s metro, it remains unclear whether the new entry will bring players back underground.

4A Games and Deep Silver have not shared gameplay details yet, but fans will not have to wait long to learn more. The full global showcase will air on the official Xbox YouTube channel on April 16 at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT / 7 PM CEST.

The First Tease Hinges On An Iconic Piece of Gear

The official Metro 2039 webpage centers on a looping image of a wristwatch that looks like a new take on protagonist Artyom’s iconic watch, which has appeared in different forms across the series and become one of Metro’s most recognizable pieces of survival gear. The display also shows an oxygen filter countdown reading 2039, making the title reference impossible to miss.

What remains unclear is whether this is the official in-game watch design for Metro 2039 or simply a teaser visual built for the announcement campaign. Either way, it is a smart pull for longtime players, including myself. And yes, I would absolutely buy one.
