DnD 2024 Core Rulebooks Will Release For Creative Commons

After over a year of debate, concern, and communication between Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons & Dragons player base, an announcement regarding the 2024 expanded core rulebooks and their status for inclusion in the DnD Creative Commons has been made.

The newest edition of the core rulebooks, dubbed “5.5” by fans, will update the original Fifth Edition core rulesets to include changes and tweaks for existing Fifth Edition content, as well as upcoming sourcebooks and expansions. Its inclusion in the DnD Creative Commons is critical for creators who focus entirely on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop.

In a Twitter/X post shared to the DnDBeyond official account, it has been confirmed that the 2024 Expanded Core Rulebooks, expected for release in September, will be included in the DnD Creative Commons starting in early 2025.

The announcement comes after over a year of debate, in which Wizards of the Coast had originally said the newest edition updates wouldn’t be included in the Creative Commons library.

The reception of the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans stating that it is a win for Wizards, a good move for players, and a critical step in restoring trust with the DnD community.

What is the Creative Commons?

The DnD Creative Commons is a type of license that allows all third-party Dungeons & Dragons fans to legally use included content as long as they source Wizards of the Coast as the original creator.

Using this license, players can take their campaigns and share them with the world as original content, even if the story is set in one of the iconic locations of the tabletop game. The move to include the newest expanded core rulebooks ensures that creators can continue to share their experiences in the game and make merch, homebrew guides, and more without fear of copyright retaliation.
