Moonlight Peaks is surprisingly forgiving when it comes to obtaining your first set of tools. The majority of what you’ll need to get farming is available right from the start. However, this doesn’t include the Fishing Rod. Unfortunately, fishing is a lucrative way to earn money during the first few months of the game. You’ll need to hunt down the fishing rod quickly to start getting the funds needed for new seeds.
The Fishing Rod is locked behind a starter quest and a character interaction. In this guide, we will break down how to find the rod and how to use it once you’ve got it in your inventory.
How to Find the Fishing Rod in Moonlight Peaks

To find the Fishing Rod, you will need to encounter Noel in the forest outside of town. However, this cutscene won’t start until you have completed Orlock’s quest “Meet the Townsfolk.” After speaking to Noel for the first time and completing the quest, a sparkling exclamation point will appear in the forest above the town.
Head into the forest to encounter Noel fishing in the water near the river. He will turn and challenge you to a fishing competition.
After the interaction, Noel will give you the basic Fishing Rod. He will then challenge you to try and catch more fish than him.
How to Use the Fishing Rod in Moonlight Peaks

To use the Fishing Rod, walk to a body of water where there are dark, fish shapes present. Using the “R” bumper, select the Fishing Rod from the tool wheel. Aim for the shapes and cast your line by pressing “Y”. To attract the fish, gently tug your line back toward the shore. The fish will nibble the line several times before biting. Once you have a bite, hold “Y” to drag it back to shore.
To complete Noel’s quest “Outfish the Fisherman”, bring him three fish. He will concede that you are a solid fisher, and you will get to keep the Fishing Rod for your troubles.
The Fishing Rod in Moonlight Peaks can be upgraded at the Howling Hammer, but you’ll have to get Gold Ingots before the upgrade becomes available. Until the upgrade, only small fish can be reeled in. After the upgrade, any fish in the water is free game.
