If you spend any time on the bookish side of the internet, you’ve probably heard someone mention Silent Books Clubs. They seem to be popping up everywhere lately. But if you happen to live somewhere without a Silent Book Club, you may be wondering how to start your own.
What is a Silent Book Club?
The concept behind Silent Book Club is simple. Readers get together, have a quick chat, and then spend some solid time quietly reading with good company.
While there’s nothing stopping you from grabbing a few friends and having an informal silent reading trip, you could also make it official. Silent Book Club is an international organization with chapters all around the world. You can check their website to see if an officially sanctioned chapter already exists in your area. More are popping up all the time! But if there isn’t one near you yet, you could start your own.
How to Start an Official Silent Book Club Chapter

The Silent Book Club website offers a helpful how-to on how to start a Silent Book Club chapter near you. If you plan on hosting something called a Silent Book Club, you will need to register with them, as the term is trademarked. Thankfully, doing so is not too difficult – you need to register with their website, which is free to do so long as you’re not planning to charge money for your book club meetups.
To become an official Silent Book Club chapter, you’ll need to commit to meeting at least once per month. It’s a volunteer position, and as the book club leader you’ll take on the responsibility for finding out when and where to meet each month, as well as helping facilitate the meetings.
You’ll also need to create an online hub for the details about your chapter, such as a Facebook page, Instagram, etc. This is also how you’ll get the word out for people to join your events and let them know when and where each month’s meeting takes place. The group I hang out with each month uses Facebook events, and it’s worked pretty well for them so far.
After you start your Silent Book Club chapter and register with the website, you’ll get access to an online group for book club organizers. This group gives you access to official branding, such as logos and other items. You’ll also get a host discount on any Silent Book Club merch you want to buy for yourself or your club.
And that, in a nutshell, is everything you need to know about how to start a Silent Book Club chapter in your area! If you prefer not to register your club on the SBC website, their rules state that you can use another name such as “Quiet Reading Meetup.”
