Rumors and speculation have made up most of our Elder Scrolls 6 knowledge since the game’s teaser trailer first debuted 8 years ago. But over the last year or so, those rumors have started to solidify around a few key facts. Most Bethesda fans felt fairly confident we’d cracked the game’s title (Sentinel) and location (Hammerfell). Now, at long last, Bethesda has confirmed the first official, concrete details about the next Elder Scrolls game.
As confirmed via the official @BethesdaStudios accounts on social media, the next Elder Scrolls game will indeed be called The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. The new teaser trailer reveals little else, but a quotation at the very end of the trailer confirms that the game will be set in Hammerfell. Not only that, but it’s certainly looking like rumors that the game will focus on the history of the titular Elder Scrolls are accurate as well, as an Elder Scroll is the primary focal point for the trailer. All that said, fans shouldn’t get too excited that the Skyrim anniversary shadow drop rumors are coming to fruition.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Officially Called Sentinel, But It’s Probably Not Shadow Dropping This Year
With the 15th anniversary of Skyrim coming up, many fans are hoping to see a glorious moment in Elder Scrolls history. The occasion would, many argue, be a perfect time to just casually shadow drop The Elder Scrolls 6. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see it. But even if I do think we will get The Elder Scrolls 6 without a long lead time, Bethesda appears to be trying to temper expectations.
Their initial reveal trailer post was quickly followed by a longer tweet response. And that message seems to hint pretty strongly that we shouldn’t take this title confirmation as proof that the shadow drop is imminent.
“Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you,” the response tweet reads. In other words: we gave you some breadcrumbs, but don’t go off thinking you’re going to play Sentinel next week. This could even indicate that we won’t get a more extended trailer at the 2026 Game Awards in December, something I know many of us were hoping to see.
Still, this is a pretty big day for my fellow Elder Scrolls fans. We’ve had very few official details about the next game in all this time. Finally having actual confirmation of the title and location feels like a massive step towards me actually playing this game before I’m the next Skyrim grandma.
The trailer isn’t much longer than the 2018 teaser from so many years ago. However, it does prominently show an Elder Scrolls emerging from the sand, set to the epic sounds of the Elder Scrolls soundtrack. We also get a look at the title in its official font glory for the very first time. As the title screen fades away, we’re treated to one final hint about the game: a quote from Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell.
This confirms the game’s setting. The quote itself reads, “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” I’m sure that fans will go deep on the lore here and come up with plenty of exciting new theories. At first glance, though, my main takeaway is that we’re definitely going hard on Elder Scrolls lore in this game. And I am so very here for it.
Still here? Good.
