I’m going to say this really loud and upfront for those who are going to shout about it in the comments: the Winter Offensive update for Battlefield RedSec is far from bug-free, but it’s still great.
The update full-on broke the game, preventing players from accessing game modes in the main menu. It actually also got in the way of what I was hoping would be a brilliant few hours of Elite Series fun with pros competing in battle royale. However, none of this takes away from the fact that it’s a live event with great value for your free time.
Winter Offensive Offers Great Value For Time in a Free Title

Battlefield RedSec‘s first live event, California Resistance, was a bit flat for me. It added stashes to the game’s fantastic battle royale mode, offering powerful loot from the first second of a match if you’re brave enough to go for it.
Unfortunately, the bonus battle pass path it added was difficult to work through due to limited challenges rewarding progress and no clarity on how to advance it. You had Sabotage and Battle Royale that could add progress, but they felt random at best.
Within two matches of Conquest in Winter Offensive, I can tell it’s extremely different. I’ve made decent progress to the already far more fun cosmetics in the bonus battle pass already, and the elemental impact of snow and ice on traditional game modes feels amazing.
Ice will slowly build up on screen and make it challenging to move around and attack enemies, mirroring the type of fatigue I expect soldiers face in frozen conditions. There are also just more modes in which you can add progress to the battle pass from.
Overall, the update feels much more player-friendly, particularly for free-to-play players. The free cosmetics look great, there is plenty of variety, and ways to feel included even if you don’t have the premium battle pass. There is a little more of what I like to see being offered to every player at the base level.
Sadly, the update is marred by the way something in its code has busted the game. I can’t defend a broken update, but these things do happen. It just would have been better if it had happened after the holidays and far away from the Lite-Esports tournament that was planned for the day after its release.
