Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade isn’t launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 until January 22, but fans can download a free demo right now. A modern-day remake of the seminal Final Fantasy 7 was a long-held dream for many classic JRPG fans until it was finally released back in 2020 – at least the first part, anyway.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was only the first installment in a trilogy that retold the iconic story of Cloud Strife and his many allies and enemies, one that spanned the original’s opening chapters in the dystopian city of Midgar. Though Final Fantasy 7 Remake was initially exclusive to PlayStation 4, an updated re-release was put out for PS5 and PC in the summer of 2021.

This re-release, titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, was announced for Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this year, and players got a small sample of it ahead of its January 22 release date.
As announced on the official Final Fantasy 7 Twitter page, this demo is currently available on Switch 2 and Xbox consoles, and progress from the demo can be transferred over to the main game once it launches.
The demo consists of Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s opening section, where Cloud and the rest of Team Avalanche perform a daring raid on Shinra’s Mako Reactor 1. It features two difficulty settings (Easy and Normal), with the option to switch between Modern and Classic controls. There is even a special “headstart” option that gives the player extra experience and money right off the bat.
So far, there is no word on when 2024’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or its eventual follow-up will be available on the Switch 2, but it is a safe bet that both are eventually coming to Nintendo’s multi-functional console. In the meantime, Switch 2 owners can get caught up on the lore of Final Fantasy 7 Remake thanks to this new demo, as well as previous Final Fantasy 7 titles like 2022’s Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 – Reunion.
