Tetris Forever is an upcoming collection, documentary, and celebration of Tetris. It explores the history of the game through the stories of those who have worked on it, allows you to play an array of past versions, and now we know it even packs in an honest-to-goodness brand-new game in the series called Tetris Time Warp.
Yes, you read that right. Tetris Time Warp is a unique game that offers something brand new for the series while celebrating its past. It’s the best kind of multiplayer evolution we all wish we had back in the day. If you’re anything like me and loved competing for the Tetris high score with friends back then, this is for you.
Let’s do the Tetris Time Warp Again

So, what exactly is Tetris Time Warp? It’s a version of the classic game that can be played solo or with up to three friends. The basics of rotating Tetriminos to complete lines as they fall are the same. However, once you hit ten completed lines, you’ll get a special one.
Completing a line with this Tetrimino transports you into the game/era it resembled when it landed. This could be all the way back into Tetris 88, Tetris Bombliss, Super Tetris, and a few others. From there, you’ll need to complete a specific challenge to escape the game/era and return to the modern day before another ten lines go by and you repeat the process.
In multiplayer, the twist is that your special Tetrimino will also transport your friends into the game/era you travel. They’ve got to complete a challenge as well, but they’ll remain trapped if they can’t do it. While skill will certainly still be a big part of the game, I suspect trapping your friends in the past is how you’re going to win most matches.

We’ve known for a while that Tetris Forever will be released on November 12, 2024. Developed by Digital Eclipse, a company with an amazing pedigree for re-releases, it’s a unique project that offers video game history fans a meaty range of media to dig into.
In addition to a collection of games celebrating the series, Tetris Forever has 90 minutes of new documentary footage cataloging the rich history behind Tetris. I love it when retro titles make a comeback in a new form, such as Atari Centipede, or with extra media. It’s definitely not to everyone’s taste, but I adore learning more about the games that shaped the industry as we know it today.
As you can see in the trailer for this brand new Tetris game, the developer wanted to include something new that let it put its own stamp on the series. I think that Tetris Time Warp certainly does a good job of that with an interesting blend of classic gameplay and multiplayer that retains the heart of what these games have always been about: Beating high scores and playing with friends.
