It’s no secret that we at Bonus Action enjoy rolling dice, or that we have quite a few book fans among us. But one thing we love even more is when books involve rolling dice, which is just one of the exciting elements you’ll get in the Romance title Dating and Dragons by Kristy Boyce.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because I’ve recommended Boyce’s previous D&D YA Romance, Dungeons and Drama, about a thousand times. Dating and Dragons has a similar name and theme, but it’s more spiritual successor than actual sequel. And while the book just came out on December 31, Boyce has already shared its first exciting claim to 2025 fame.
Dungeons and Drama follows high school student Quinn, whose family moves in the middle of the semester. While starting at a new school in February isn’t ideal, Quinn’s secretly glad to escape the friend group drama from her old school. She’s excited, and a little nervous, when she finds a brand new group to play D&D with right away! But they do things a little differently… as in, live on camera. And the nice guy that took her grandma’s “First Day of School” photo on day one? Suddenly, he doesn’t seem so nice now that he’s rolling dice with his crew.
Dating and Dragons is the Barnes & Noble YA Pick for January 2025
For those who’ve set foot in a Barnes & Noble since the start of the year, the title might ring a bell for another reason. The bookstore selects a featured book every month, often including a special exclusive edition available only from B&N stores. And this January, the YA featured pick is none other than YA contemporary romance with a D&D twist, Dating and Dragons.
As Boyce shared via her Instagram, Barnes & Noble has released a special edition of her new book to coincide with choosing it as their January YA book pick. The special edition is purple with gold foil, compared to the standard teal cover. But that’s not all! It includes a bonus deleted scene from the book-in-progress and comes with a special D20. For dice goblins like me, that sparkly blue delight is a must-have addition to the hoard.
In addition to being chosen as the B&N January YA Pick, Dating and Dragons is also an Amazon Editors’ Pick for the best YA of January and currently sits at #2 on the bestseller list there. Clearly, this follow-up to the adorable and delightful Dungeons and Drama is a must-read for anyone who loves a sweet YA romance with a dash of nerdy goodness. Yours truly is about halfway through reading it as we speak, and let me tell you, it is good stuff! Boyce’s knowledge of D&D and ability to write true-to-life characters who spark on the page is back and better than ever.
While those full tables of special editions prove that there are likely plenty of special B&N copies to go around, the free D20 with purchase is only available while supplies last. Boyce also notes that some stores have been a bit forgetful about the D20 of it all, so make sure you ask at the counter to see if they have any in stock! According to readers, not every sales associate is aware of the promotion, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there aren’t any left.
