Kingdom Hearts 4 news has continued to flow from the 2026 D23 conference following the Deep Dive series panel that aired on August 15, 2026. The panel included an extended cut of the trailer that aired the previous evening, announcing that the “Coco” movie will be getting its own world in the next installment of the series. The trailer confirmed several returning characters and revealed Riku’s new appearance.
The panel kicked off with the surprise announcement that Nomura would be joining the members of development being interviewed. They spoke about some of their favorite worlds, with Nomura citing that he absolutely had to include the “Nightmare Before Christmas” world in the original game. However, after a few intense minutes of interview questions, it was announced that another trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 would be shown, and that the 90-second clip from the previous evening was actually a teaser for a four-minute-long cinematic that included updated information about previous characters, including Riku.
Riku Will Return in Kingdom Hearts 4
Riku appears near the end of the extended trailer when Sora is under attack. There is a flash, and he appears with his keyblade and an updated appearance to match Sora’s, stepping in to assist against three giant Heartless that appear to be attacking the city.
At this time, it isn’t known how Riku followed Sora, or if they fell into the world together at an earlier point in the game and got separated. His new appearance matches past designs. He is wearing an overshirt with short sleeves covered in dark Disney motifs, and his hair is cropped very short.
The trailer doesn’t give a full-body view, but instead offers a brief glimpse of Riku’s entire face before he turns to face the Heartless.
Alongside Riku, players got a look at King Mickey’s role in Kingdom Hearts 4, as well as confirmation that Donald and Goofy will be playable away from Sora. This seems to imply that the game will jump between perspectives as the story progresses, and possibly require players to return to worlds several times, similar to the storyline progression of Kingdom Hearts 2.
