KeokeN Interactive today shared its Kickstarter page for what might be the developer’s last hope at creating more games and keeping the studio alive so it can tell more tales within the Deliver Us universe. You can visit the page now and sign up to be notified when it goes live, but there’s nothing on it quite yet.
News of this Kickstarter project coming soon is bittersweet for KeokeN Interactive. At the end of April 2024, the developer announced that it had failed to acquire an investor for any of the projects it was pitching at GDC, meaning it had been forced to lay off almost all staff.
Deliver Us Home’s Kickstarter Project is KeokeN Interactive’s Last Shot at Financial Stability
The two remaining staff are CEO Koen Deetman and managing director Paul Deetman, the brothers who founded the studio in 2014. At the time, the brothers revealed that they planned to prepare and launch the aforementioned Kickstarter for Deliver Us Home, the third game in the Deliver Us series.
The big difference between Deliver Us Home and its predecessors will be, that should its Kickstarter be successful, it will be developed alongside a community from day one. This community may even have input into design decisions, depending on what rewards the pledges offer and if there are any stretch goals.
With no details on Kickstarter right now, it’s also impossible to say how much KeokeN Interactive would be hoping to raise to develop it. With just two staff members, the goal might be lower. However, if the developer aims to rehire any of the staff it was forced to lay off, that goal will be higher.
It’s not unheard of for companies to sustain themselves through Kickstarter projects that lead to products that can then go on to generate ongoing sales. Genki is the perfect example of a business that does just that. Genki always pitches finished products, though, and what KeokeN Interactive is pitching is much more conceptual and takes longer to build and distribute.
KeokeN Interactive is best known for the criminally underrated Deliver Us the Moon and follow-up Deliver Us Mars. Each one is a narrative-driven adventure game that tell intriguing sci-fi tales that are grounded, gripping, and stick with you long after you’ve played them.
Very little is known about Deliver Us Home. The game is slated to tell the story of a solitary astronaut who is tasked with securing a new planet to call home for humanity’s future, and the story will follow a dangerous and mysterious path on a planet where settlers somehow appear to have arrived long before the astronaut.
