It’s time to push back against the corruption and get that loot in the mayhem and bloody action of Path of Exile 2, the upcoming ARPG from Grinding Gear Games.

This sequel to the fan-favorite released in 2013 will offer a new experience to players while retaining the core, tried and true DNA that makes the game so beloved while evolving and adding more to make it a hefty new offering. It will have monsters, bosses, plenty of challenges, and a hell of a lot of loot, all the things you can hope for.

When Does Path of Exile 2 Early Access Release?

Path of Exile 2 will be released into early access on December 6, 2024. The game will be available for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

What Can I Expect From Path of Exile 2’s Early Access

Since Path of Exile 2 is starting in early access, it means it won’t be content complete yet, but with how big the game will be upon EA launch, calling it an early access launch feels like a disservice.

Path of Exile 2 will have plenty for players to do and experience, and we have listed the main details you’ll want to know here. If you want to dive deep and see the game in action, I recommend watching the GGG Livestream for an extensive look at gameplay and a thorough walkthrough of the game’s system.

Story/Acts

Path of Exile 2 will launch with three story acts, which should take around 25 hours to complete. The full release will have six, but the developers decided that to have a robust endgame for launch, they would shift focus away from the later acts and work on endgame content.

As such, when you complete acts 1-3, you then replay those acts on a hard difficulty called “Cruel”. After that, you will hit the endgame content. Once the full release is available, Cruel difficulty will be removed, and you will then play through all six acts as intended.

Class/Progression

At launch, Path of Exile 2 will have six of its planned 12 classes available for players. These being the Warrior, Ranger, Witch, Sorceress, Mercenary, and Monk. Each of these will come with two specializations, with a third coming at full release. These allow more variety in playstyle and theme, such as the Rangers Deadeye for better use of arrows and buffs to those abilities.

Beyond that, players will have a lot of the classic ARPG gameplay tropes: level up, get gear, kill bigger enemies, get loot, and repeat.

What Path of Exile 2 does differently is how you can do that, especially with your class. Unlike other ARPGS, Path of Exile 2 is completely free form, meaning while you may choose a class and specific playstyle, it is possible to learn spells from other classes to have a truly unique build by mixing and matching abilities. On top of that, you have plenty of ways to modify and change ability properties with Support Gems, which can change how attacks work, such as adding more projectiles or causing certain status effects.

This is coupled with the Passive Skill Tree, a vast, 1500-node tree that refines and adds to your power, with different benefits and bonuses that can come from multiple classes. You also can have two setups, and when you swap weapons mid-fight, your tree changes to match, so there is even more variety.

Add to that the numerous items, quantity of loot and items to upgrade and unlock new skills, and the Ascension process, which features multiple ways to progress your specialization, and you are spoiled for choice.

As a reminder, this is early access despite having more content than some fully released titles.

Endgame

Path of Exile 2 is releasing with a huge endgame off the bat, with many returning favorites from the original with changes, tweaks, and a few surprises that make them new.

These occur on the Atlas, a massive, infinite map with randomized zones and challenges to complete that goes in all directions. Using Waystones, which have a tier system, you choose which direction to go on the paths available. You can select the strength of enemies, customize them using currency items you find in the game, and tailor each zone to help find the gear you want. Plus, there is even an Altas skill tree, letting you further hone the endgame experience and modifiers that affect the content you’ll face.

Along with that, there are several major pieces of content in the endgame to enjoy: Breach, Ritual, Delirium, Expeditions, Trials, and Pinnacle Bosses, to name a few, with more to be added over time. Each has its own challenges, ways to be modified, rewards, and progression, so whether you try one or all, there is always something to strive for.
