One of the most exciting things about Moonlight Peaks is how it puts a fresh, supernatural spin on your classic farming sim. Everything from the villagers you meet to the crops you plant is just a bit different. Naturally, this extends to another farming sim staple: farm animals. You’ll be able to care for a variety of critters in Moonlight Peaks, but they’re a bit different from your typical cows and chickens. And yes, you can give them little hats.
In Moonlight Peaks, Luna is your go-to for most everything farm-related. Her stand is where you’ll buy your seeds, and her yard is where you’ll find the animals on offer. At first, you’ll likely only see Cheekens. But after you build your barn and bring the first one home, additional options will open up. New critters get added as the seasons go by, as well, giving you a variety of animals to care for and resources to process for profit. Where to Get Animals in Moonlight Peaks
To get animals in Moonlight Peaks, you’ll need to visit Luna’s farm. Next to her house, there’s a small paddock that will have 3 different animals available every day. Before you complete the quest to build your first barn, you will only see Cheekens. After your barn is in place, the available animals will randomly rotate each day. In addition to different varieties, you will also see different colors for critters on different days.
If you see one you like, simply interact with the animal, and you’ll be prompted to adopt it. So long as you have enough coin and space in your barn, you can bring the critter home right away. You will, however, need to give it a name first. And unlike many farming sims, you won’t get a suggestion to use, so put on your thinking cap before adopting a Cheeken, Piggoat, or Cowcula.
How to Build Your First Barn in Moonlight Peaks
Like most of the buildings you’ll build in Moonlight Peaks, you need to visit Ridge’s shop, The Howling Hammer, to build your barn. A story quest with Luna will prompt you to do this so you can adopt a Cheeken. To build the barn, you’ll need to clear enough space for it on your farm. Then, head to the Howling Hammer with the following resources, and you’ll be able to build the barn:
- 4000 Gold
- A fully cleared 10 by 6 area
It will take Ridge a few days to complete construction. Once he does, you can adopt your first farm animal in Moonlight Peaks. The barn holds 4 animals, so you’ll need to build a second to get more than 4 critters. We haven’t yet found a way to increase the size of your current barn.

TIP: Once you unlock your Hellkitten form, try interacting with your animals while transformed. Instead of just making happy noises, they’ll actually chat with you like in the screenshot above! It is VERY cute.
How to Get Hats for Your Animals in Moonlight Peaks
When you pet your first Cheeken, you’ll no doubt notice the “give hat” option. You have a variety of tiny hats that you can give to all your farm animals, if you know where to look. There is a vendor who shows up in town during the weekend Midnight Market (Saturdays and Sundays). His name is Snek, and he sells the tiny hats for your critters.
TIP: Want Snek to say something other than “sssss”? Talk to him while in Hellkitten form!
The available hat options rotate each time Snek is in town. So if you’re really waiting for a witch hat for your Cheeken, it may take some time to show up. Here are all of the hat options we’ve found so far & what they cost. Aside from color variants, I’m pretty sure this is the full list available as of Year One.
