When Factory Fortress INC finally confirmed when the Kickstarter campaign for Trench Crusade would be kicking off, I lost my mind a little bit. This is a skirmish wargame with miniatures made by a group of people with an incredible pedigree in video games and tabletop games, and it’s not one you’ll want to miss.
The Trench Crusade Kickstarter campaign launches on October 29, 2024. If you’re as keen as I am, then I recommend signing up to be notified now so that you don’t miss it when it goes live. There will almost certainly be some early bird specials, and with this many miniatures on the cards, every penny counts.
A Blasphemous & Bloody Skirmish Wargame
Trench Crusade is a skirmish wargame similar to Warhammer 40K. It’s been built by Mike Franchina and Tuomas Pirinen who have worked on Diablo, Path of Exile, Magic: The Gathering, Mordheim, and Warhammer 6th Edition between them.
As with most board games, it’s your imagination that does the heavy lifting. However, Trench Crusade packs in a hefty amount of lore and some truly stunning miniatures for you to paint and play with. This is a game for which there’s no appropriate word to describe the sheer level of gore and horror in.
Trench Crusade‘s world is an alternative version of Earth in which crusaders in the First Crusade threw aside their vows and opened the Gates of Hell. Out of those gates poured armies of the damned, and at the time the game is set, 1914, they’ve not stopped.
This universe is brutal, with a constant demonic war now having reshaped history and even the land itself into a hellscape that’s unrecognizable. However, if you look at the concept art, it’s actually not too far from what we see when looking back at images of the First World War.

I think that’s where Trench Crusade really succeeds as a skirmish wargame. It’s the real-world events and imagery it’s based on that makes it so visceral. Yes, there are horrifically mutated creatures that don’t fit with what I’m saying, but the Trench Pilgrims and even the twisted Black Grail Amalgams all have some basis in the relatively ancient technology and attire being worn by soldiers during that terrible time.
If this has piqued your interest, then check out the game’s official Twitter account for more images of the miniatures. There’s not long to wait now until you can put your money down and know that you’ll be getting a set of each faction in due course.
