In addition to her standard monthly Reese’s Book Club picks for adult readers, Reese Witherspoon likes to throw out the occasional YA pick. Generally, we get one recommended YA read every summer, perfect for light beach reading and summers off school.
This year, Reese recruited her nieces to help select our summer YA pick, and the trio has knocked it out of the park with this one.
Gaming and Shakespeare Collide in Reese’s Book Club Pick Twelfth Knight
Per usual, Reese shared the latest YA pick for Reese’s Book Club via Instagram:
The selection, Twelfth Knight, boasts the accolade of being written by the bestselling author of YA fantasy The Atlas Six. But that’s not all that has readers excited to dive into this summer read.
Twelfth Knight is equal parts a modern Shakespeare retelling and an ode to the worlds of tabletop and online gaming. Like the beloved Amanda Bynes movie She’s the Man before it, this book will take the characters and mistaken identity premise from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and turn them into something new.
The book centers on Viola Reyes, a prickly YA heroine whose painstakingly designed TTRPG campaign has been declined by her friends. As Student Body Vice President, she’s also perpetually annoyed by Jack Orsino, the President who really just doesn’t put enough effort in.
Thankfully, she can retreat into the world of her favorite MMORPG… where she hides behind a masculine alter-ego to avoid the online harassment of being a female gamer.
Enter, none other than Jack Orsino, who winds up playing the MMORPG after a football injury takes him off the field. Seasoned readers and fans of Shakespeare can imagine what happens next.
If comments on the initial Instagram posts are any indication, Reese’s Book Club fans are thrilled with this selection. Many readers say they’ve already bought their copy, while others note the sprayed edges that read “Game On” with glee.
One note for readers new to Reese’s selections – this YA book pick is not her June selection for the main Book Club readers. That will be the 100th adult pick and will likely be announced around the start of the month. The YA selections are sort of little bonus summer recommendations offered on a less regular basis.
Twelfth Knight was released on May 28, 2024, and is available now wherever you buy your books.
