Warning: This article contains spoilers for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
There could be a new God of War spin-off in the works with an interesting twist for fans of the more recent entries in the series. Sony’s epic God of War franchise has had no shortage of Earth-shattering developments in recent memory, with a new spin-off prequel being released on PS5 just last month and a remake of the original Greek trilogy officially in development.
Meanwhile, fans have been speculating on what the next 3D God of War game could be like, with much of the speculation being that it will either star Kratos’s son, Atreus, or take Kratos to ancient Egypt to battle yet another divine pantheon. A recent comment by Jason Schreier suggested that Sony is looking to branch out the God of War IP into a sort of expanded universe similar to the MCU franchise, so both of these possibilities could become a reality someday.
Rumor: Cory Barlog Could Be Working On A Loki-Centric God of War Spin-Off
Some potential details about the next God of War game were recently shared by someone claiming to be a former senior writer at Sony Interactive Entertainment. According to this info, which has been posted on Reddit and Resetera, God of War 2 and God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog is returning to helm this new project, which will supposedly launch in 2027 after being officially announced at some point this summer.
All that is stated about the game itself is that it will be a “new spin-off set within the God of War Universe” and that Atreus won’t be the main character. However, some fans think this means that he will instead be referred to by his Nordic name of Loki (yes, that Loki). At the end of God of War Ragnarok, Atreus parts ways with Kratos to learn more about his heritage and find more of the Frost Giants, with his father telling him that “Loki will go, Atreus remains.”
So, technically, the rumored God of War spin-off could still have Atreus/Loki in the starring role, but some fans speculate that it will feature a different playable character altogether. Some of the more popular candidates so far are Faye (Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother) and Deimos (Kratos’s brother who was recently featured in God of War Sons of Sparta).
Gaming insider NateTheHate recently added to these rumors, claiming that Faye will be the lead character of Cory Barlog’s new God of War spin-off. Additionally, the game’s combat is said to be more action-focused than the most recent God of War titles.
These leak also say that this new God of War game will be revealed sometime later this year – perhaps at the upcoming Summer Games Fest 2026 or a future PlayStation livestream. Of course, none of this information should be taken as a certainty until Sony makes an official announcement, but this small leak still gives us all plenty to speculate on.
