Book of the Month is one of the most popular book subscription services in the United States. They offer subscribers one hardcover book a month for around $12.50 a month, a relative bargain in today’s book economy. These books come from a curated selection of monthly picks, combining subscription service and recommendation.
In recent years, the company has begun experimenting with tweaks to their model. This includes the addition of an audiobook tier and increasing the pool of book picks each month. Now, they’re getting into the publishing game by releasing their own exclusive short story collection, Volume 0. The only trouble is, their members can’t seem to figure out how to buy it.
BOTM Short Story Collection Hides from Subscribers at Launch
Book of the Month subscribers know to start looking out for next month’s picks towards the end of the previous month. This April, BOTM took to Instagram to tease something new for the month of May. Fans were invested by the time the surprise was revealed to be an exclusive BOTM-published collection of seven short stories:
The collection, called Volume 0, features short stories from seven different authors. Theoretically, it’s available for subscribers to add to their May boxes. However, the comments reveal a bit of a snag with the launch of this new project.
Many commenters note that they can’t seem to find Volume 0 anywhere on the Book of the Month website. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that, despite the big announcement, the collection isn’t amongst the May picks. Rather, it’s an optional (paid) add-on.
Add-ons are listed in a separate area of Book of the Month from the main picks. Each month, users can navigate to the add-ons section to see options for additional monthly books they can add to their delivery – for an additional price. This is where Book of the Month tells users they can find the new short story collection.
But for many subscribers, the book simply isn’t there. Commenters note they’d love to add the book to their box, but it isn’t showing up as an option even when they toggle to the add-on list.
In response, BOTM suggests users make sure they’re logged in, have BFF status, and update their app. It’s unclear whether users can even buy the book from their web browser.
Overall, fans seem curious about the new collection but confused about the pricing and rollout. Hopefully, the snags will be resolved soon, as BOTM is active in responding to comments and notes they’re “taking feedback.”
