Nintendo has finally announced the next generation of mainline Pokémon games during the February 27 Pokémon Presents livestream. At the very end of the recent livestream, viewers were greeted with a brief trailer for the new games, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, both of which are currently set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2027.
In addition to showing off a new, tropical location filled with Pokémon to collect and train, the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer unveiled the new trio of Starters coming to the games. As many of you might already know, every mainline Pokémon game gives players a choice between three Pokémon to start with, each one representing the three basic elements of Fire, Water, or Grass.
Pokémon Winds And Waves Starters Continues The Series Tradition
This will remain the case in Pokémon Winds and Waves, which presents players with the options of Browt (Grass), Pombon (Fire), and Gecqua (Water). Not long after these cute critters were first unveiled, Nintendo released additional information about them on social media. Of course, each of these Starter Pokémon Winds and Waves Starters will likely have additional evolved forms, but these have not been revealed at this time.
Browt is Our Gen 10 Grass-Type Starter

Starting out this trio of Pokémon Generation 10 Starters is Browt, a green, birdlike creature that will serve as the Grass-type option. According to Twitter, Browt is known as the “Chickpea Pokémon” and has an “energetic but clumsy” personality. Its “cocoon leaves” are used to photosynthesize light for nourishment – and probably to charge up a devastating Solar Beam attack.
Design-wise, Browt seems very similar to Rowlet, the avian Grass-type Starter from Pokémon Sun and Moon. Some fans have even drawn a humorous comparison to the Angry Birds games thanks to Browt’s round face and somewhat grumpy-looking eyebrows.
Pombon is Gen 10’s Fluffy Fire-type starter

Next up is Pombon, a fluffy, doglike Fire-type Starter that will greet players when they first boot up Pokémon Winds and Waves. The early Twitter promotional materials state that Pombon is called the “Puppy Pokémon” and is “innocent and friendly.” It’s said that Pombon’s throat faintly glows due to its lungs, which generate heat that will likely be used for a variety of high-temperature attacks like Flamethrower and Fire Blast.
Visually, Pombon takes cues from real-life Pomeranians, and many fans have already fallen in love with its cute face and happy demeanor. The last quadrupedal Fire-type Pokémon was Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Litten, a cat-like critter whose evolved form, Incineroar, gained notoriety thanks to its playable appearances in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Only time will tell if Pombon gains similar stardom, but it’s already warmed its way into our hearts.
Gen 10’s Water-Type Starter is Gecqula

Last but not least is Gecqua, the reptilian Water-type Starter for Pokémon Winds and Waves. Twitter refers to Gecqua as the “Water And Bubble” Pokémon, and says that it “maneuvers with calculated cuteness through exaggerated mannerisms.” Its tail is said to shoot out elastic water orbs, which will certainly complement existing attacks like Water Gun and Bubble Beam.
In terms of design, Gecqua most closely resembles real-life reptiles and amphibians like geckos and tree frogs. Among its Water-type Starter predecessors, it seems to take inspiration from Pokémon Sword and Shield‘s Sobble and Pokémon X and Y‘s Froakie – the latter of which was also represented in Super Smash Bros Ultimate via its later form, Greninja.
