With the highly anticipated March 10th update, Fields of Mistria has finally added the option for farmers to befriend a cat or dog. These new animals will be in addition to any farm creatures you’re already taking care of. And best of all, your cat or dog will actually help out around the farm, completing various tasks!
Whether you’re jumping back into your existing save or starting a new one, our Fields of Mistria pet guide will break down everything you need to know about your new pet.

How to Get a Pet in Fields of Mistria
Pets are available starting with the second major update, v0.13.0. Once you update your game, how you get your new pet depends on whether you start a new game or continue your existing save.
For an existing save, you will dream of your pet the first time you go to sleep. This lets you choose the pet’s name and appearance, including whether you get a cat or a dog. Then, when you wake up the next morning, your pet will magically appear!
In a brand-new Fields of Mistria save, the Pet Dream cutscene will appear on Spring 7th in Year One. So, you’ll have to wait a few days before befriending your new buddy.
Pet Options in Fields of Mistria
During the Pet Dream cutscene, you will get to choose the following about your new pet:
- Appearance, including cat or dog and the color/pattern
- Pet name – random or typed in
- Pet gender – male or female
Once you pick these options, you’ll wake up to find your new pet has arrived! If you decide you’ve changed your mind, you can go to the journal page for your pet to change these options at any time. This includes adding cosmetics similar to the ones other animals can wear.
How to Get Pet Treats in Fields of Mistria
After you have the Pet Dream cutscene, pet treats will appear in Hayden’s shop. There is one for dogs and one for cats. These are optional items to increase your pet’s happiness – no need to stress if you miss a day, as pets don’t need to be fed regularly.
Both the dog treat and cat treat cost 100 gold each.
You can also craft pet treats at the mill in Mistria. To make the dog treat, you need 1 trout. To make the cat treat, you need 1 smallmouth bass.
How to Assign Tasks to Your Pet in Fields of Mistria
To get your pet to help out around the farm, you’ll need to open up the journal menu. The pet tab can be found under the animals section, right at the top.
Click on your pet to open up their journal page. Then, find the little briefcase icon at the bottom. Click the pencil next to it to edit their job. Your pet can do three different on-farm tasks:
- Collect Wood
- Collect Stone
- Collect Forageables
Pick one, and your pet will get to work as long as it’s not rainy outside! You will get the materials at the end of the day when you and your pet return home.
This menu is also where you can change their appearance, name, and cosmetics.
