I’ve been playing Rainbow Six Siege since close to its initial launch. I was there for the bad days, and I’ve played through some of the best seasons we’ve ever had. However, Ubisoft just blew everything we’ve had before out of the park, including the Metal Gear Solid crossover.
Year 11 Season 1 gave us a new Operator and, before that, we had the start of what is now a regular schedule of reworked old ones. The follow-up to that phenomenal season packs in the next Operator rework, an upgrade to ranked, some insane support for console players, and the first brand new map since Year 8.
Welcome Back To Vegas Rainbow
Okay, so Operation System Override does a lot, but the best thing it brings to the table, in my opinion, is the Calypso Casino map. For those who don’t know, this map is inspired by the Rainbow Six Vegas games, cult classics for fans of the series. I spent at least 100 hours across both with my best friend playing through the campaigns and messing around with the tactical gunplay.
It’s hard to convey just how big a deal this map is, but re-recognition of the Vegas games within the biggest live service entry Ubisoft has ever made is phenomenal. It’s not a new game in the sub-series or a new campaign, but it’ll definitely do.
Moving on, the Operator rework is Dokkaebi. The rework makes her far, far more useful as an intelligence-denier and overall more manipulative Operator. Previously, her ability would spam the enemy team’s phones and prevent them from checking cameras or using other intelligence until they’d dealt with the call. Now, she’ll target just one phone.
Sounds worse, right? Well, if the chosen enemy doesn’t answer their phone in time, it’ll explode. The explosion causes a fire that damages the Operator and prevents them from using intelligence for the rest of the round. More than this, though, it reveals the Operator. This will ruin any chances of sneaking around or painting a target on an enemy if the round timer is closing down and there’s still one pesky enemy out there somewhere.
Those are the two biggest changes for the season, but there’s still more! First, Ranked 3.0 will completely redefine how the Ranked systems work in Rainbow Six Siege. Progression is going to be more transparent, placement matches faster, and the whole experience will be, overall, far more fluid and enjoyable. I’m particularly excited about hearing what the community has to say on this one.
Secondly, the mid-season update will bring mouse and keyboard support for consoles. You read that right, and it’s going to change everything. There will be clear matchmaking rules in place to ensure fairness remains, but this is going to see an overhaul to how some of the console community play the game.
That’s all for now in this brief overview of what makes Year 11 Season 2 so incredible. If you want to read more deep dives about it over the coming week, keep an eye on our socials and sign up to our free Patreon membership to ensure you don’t miss a thing.
