Somehow, this year is Rainbow Six Siege‘s tenth as a live-service tactical shooter. Think Battlefield, but with a lot more thought behind each movement. I’ve been playing since its abysmal launch and can tell you first-hand that it’s been a wild and incredibly enjoyable ride.
As part of the game’s fourth and final season for this year, the development team is looking back at one of the most iconic Operators and giving them a total rework that’s sure to change how everyone plays. That’s right, it’s Thatcher’s time.
Thatcher’s Targeted Rework Will Seriously Change How People Play Siege
I’m going to keep this simple for those of you who might have joined Siege more recently or simply don’t understand the nuances of the game. Thatcher has always had an EMP Grenade device that knocks out enemy gadgets, thus allowing the Attacker team to bypass a few traps.
Well, now Thatcher will still be equipped to knock out enemy gadgets, but it’s slightly more convenient for whoever’s controlling him. In place of his grenade is an EMP blaster that can zap gadgets within a certain range and disable them for a few seconds at a time.
This means it’s less powerful in terms of preventing traps from taking out teammates, but it’s way better because it’s got more uses. You can pull this out to knock down an early trap at the start of a match and keep the pressure on Defenders throughout the entire attack.
I don’t know about you, but an EMP Grenade is hard to land, and the impact is difficult to gauge. With this new zapper, Thatcher becomes far more useful to players of all levels and could even start to turn up in a lot more matches over time.
The fact that Thatcher is such a part of Rainbow Six Siege‘s DNA makes this update better than it would be for most other Operators. His mask, the gadget, and the way players have made him a part of so many strategies over the years are going to mean this rework changes a lot all at once.
Over the last ten years, Rainbow Six Siege has gained a plethora of Operators, gadgets, and weapons. I love a good rework, and this one is better than many of the others we’ve seen since reworks started coming out. Hopefully, the idea behind the new gadget plays out well once the update is released on December 2, 2025.
