Pokémon TCG fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Mega Evolution for months, with hype building as Japanese releases have revealed what could be coming for English audiences. Now, the Mega Evolution expansion delivers every new Mega ex mechanic, and with flair no one expected.

The new set of 188 cards takes a sharp turn from the Scarlet & Violet era of the TCG, ushering in a focus on Mega ex cards. The new mechanics are powerful, but not without risk. Knocking out a Mega ex will earn a player three prize cards. This could make matches just a few rounds in length if players use the Trainer card strategies to the best effect.

Mega Evolution had a lot to live up to, as the original Mega TCG run during the X & Y era struggled due to cumbersome mechanics. Thankfully, the new iteration of these cards has been streamlined, making each match a thrill ride.

A Smaller Card List With A Curated Gallery

Extra-Large card lists have been fairly common over the past year, as the Scarlet & Violet era of the TCG came to a close. Thankfully, Mega Evolution kicks things off with a smaller list of carefully curated cards. This has left fans with a stunning, thoughtful gallery and decent pull rates.

The set spotlights Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Lucario ex, but the card list has debuted a series of popular options like Mega Absol ex, Mega Latias ex, and Mega Venusaur ex, among many others. The base version of these Megas is also fairly easy to pull in packs, ensuring players will have the opportunity to try them out in new decks.

Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare cards are a tricky pull in Mega Evolution, as the set purposefully limits these cards with the smaller gallery. Highly desirable cards like the Illustration Rare Mega Gardevoir ex or Illustration Rare Lillie cards are going to be a challenge for collectors to get their hands on. That said, these rare card pulls don’t damage the rest of the set, nor do they lock important cards behind a rarity barrier.

Mega Evolution Is Beautiful

While there have been some stunning cards in recent Pokémon TCG expansions, Mega Evolution has the majority of them beat.

The cards have an excellent weight and texture in this set that offers a more quality feel than some of the last sets from Scarlet & Violet. Even the standard rare holo cards have a weighted, textured feel that is lovely to look at, but also excellent when shuffling and playing.

The higher rarity options of Mega Evolution are the showstoppers. Each card is designed so that the holo overlay ripples and shifts across the image. It’s a clean, crisp look, uninterrupted by heavy etching. The Illustration Rare cards are pristine, and the lack of designed etching allows the colors from each pull to appear crisp and vibrant.

My personal favorite of this set is the Full Art rares of the Mega ex Pokemon. The designs are unique and colorful, with Mega Mawile ex in particular standing out among the mix.

Playbility That Will Excite Fans

The big takeaway from the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution expansion is how playable it is. The new mechanics add a new sense of peril to battles, while the Mega ex cards themselves are designed to pair and create unique strategies with other cards from the set.

The moves for many of the Mega ex cards are devastating, with moves that will flatten opponents when set up correctly. However, the set also harbors some sleeper options that are surprisingly deadly for a minimal cost. This includes the new edition of Inteleon, which has a low-cost move that immediately destroys a card on the bench with the lowest HP.

This is a set designed to shake up the meta, change how players build their strategies, and challenge fans to think differently. It’s a much-needed change that will be exciting for those ready to build new decks.
