September is stacking up to be a busy month not just for new game releases, but showcases as well. We already got a PlayStation State of Play this week. Now, Nintendo has confirmed the swirl of rumors with an official announcement. This month, we’re getting not one, but two Nintendo Direct showcases. One will be a dedicated 40th Anniversary Direct for The Legend of Zelda. The second will be a more traditional Nintendo Direct showcase, highlighting new and upcoming games for the Switch and Switch 2. They’re set for September 8th and September 9th, respectively, so we don’t have too long to wait.
Though not confirmed, that Legend of Zelda Direct will almost certainly give us more details on the highly anticipated Ocarina of Time remake. I’d be willing to bet that will include a first look at gameplay and the release date. Given the remake is supposed to release in 2026, it’s got to be coming out in the next few months, so it’s high time for an actual date. As for the Nintendo Direct itself, well, you know I’ve got my hopes on a Witchbrook release date reveal. Here’s when you can tune in to both showcases and a bit of what we might expect.
How to Watch the September Legend of Zelda Direct & Nintendo Direct Showcases
The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct will take place on September 8th at 10 AM ET. As with any Nintendo Direct, it will stream live on the official Nintendo YouTube account. You can hop on over there to set a reminder for when the stream goes live. It should also be available as a replay if the live air time is a bit too early for your time zone. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct will be about 30 minutes long.
The general Nintendo Direct showcase will take place the following day on September 9th. It airs at 10 AM ET on the official Nintendo YouTube account as well. The direct link for that stream is available here, and you can ask YouTube to send you a reminder. It is expected to run for about 45 minutes, which should mean we get a generous helping of new Switch 2 game trailers.
What to Expect for the September Nintendo Direct & Legend of Zelda Stream
Aside from the exact dates and runtimes, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed specific games to appear in either stream. That said, with the Ocarina of Time remake set to release this year, that game is kind of a given for the Zelda-themed stream. It could be a 30-minute stream that combines a retrospective on the series and a new look at the remake. However, it is also high time that Nintendo announced a brand-new entry in its iconic series. So, while I won’t be placing any big bets on it, I wouldn’t be too surprised if we get at least an initial teaser for the next Legend of Zelda, as well. I also wouldn’t put it past Nintendo to stay focused on its upcoming release, though.
As for the general Nintendo Direct? Well, there’s a lot of potential to fill up 45 minutes. Now that we’re well over a year into the Switch 2’s life cycle, I would expect more Switch 2 exclusive titles in the lineup. But we could certainly still see a few games targeting release for the OG Switch, as well. In terms of big Nintendo first-party projects, we’re about due for a new Animal Crossing and 3D Super Mario platformer. Either could well be announced during the September Nintendo Direct. Aside from the Ocarina of Time remake, we don’t have much on the docket for Nintendo for the rest of the year or early 2027. So, I do think we’ll see some first-party announcements here.
Of course, we’ll also likely see a few partner and indie releases. This isn’t an Indie Direct, so bigger AAA titles are more likely. However, my fellow witchy game enthusiasts shouldn’t fully give up hope on Witchbrook. Chucklefish has been sharing an awful lot about the game lately, so could the big release date reveal be nigh? We won’t know for sure until we all tune in for the Nintendo Direct on September 9th.
