While there are plenty of pastel-colored witchy games available for cozy gamers, few attempt to capture the atmospheric realism of REKA. In this witchy game, a mystical world is born between the branches of colorful trees. Not everything is as it seems – and this walkthrough is here to aid you on your journey.

REKA allows players to take on their own witch journey in a hyper-realistic world. The story, inspired by the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, tips the cozy genre on its head thanks to an eerie atmosphere and the dark legends surrounding the keeper of the chicken-legged house.

In this guide, we will cover everything players need to know about REKA, including how to use magic, forage for goods, decorate your house, complete quests, and much more.

Is REKA In Early Access?

Yes, REKA is currently in early access, debuting on PC for Steam on 09/12/2024.

The next large updates is set to include gardening among other new mechanics, but doesn’t currently have a launch date.

The last major update was “The Witching Hour”, which released in October of 2024 and added a candlemaking crafting station and numerous QoL improvements.

It is not currently available on other consoles and is not Steam Deck verified at this time.

How Much of the Game is Available in Early Access?

Currently, the game’s first chapter and opening quests are available to play. The open world is also available for exploration. This chapter appears to end after completing the Build Mode tutorial following the creation of your Chicken House.

The main quests currently total around four hours to complete without exploring the open world.

Can You Use a Controller With REKA?

Yes, and we would encourage you to. The controls, specifically for building, can be a bit tricky to manage on mouse and keyboard. The controller feels more natural with the game’s mechanics.

Character Customization in REKA

In REKA, players will take on the role of Reka, a young girl destined to become a witch. While name and gender cannot be selected, players can adjust Reka’s appearance in the character creator with a number of hairstyles, skin tones, eye colors, and outfits.

Can You Change Your Appearance After Starting The Game?

Yes, but not immediately.

Characters can customize their appearance in the game by locating The Customization Mirror in the abandoned house near Kopnik. Please see the map below for the mirror’s exact location.

NOTE:
We recommend not straying out into the open world until completing the main story quests. Players will not have access to everything they need until these quests have been completed.

How to Unlock Your Inventory in REKA

To unlock your inventory, players must reach the Witch’s house following the main quest line.

When first starting the game, players won’t be able to pick up anything other than furniture earned as rewards or stored inside crates around the map. After reaching the Witch’s house and picking up her recipe book from the bench in the yard, the inventory will become accessible using “Tab” or “Y.”

How to Unlock the Map in REKA

To get the Map in REKA, players must unlock their inventory. The Map is a tab in the recipe book that is used as an inventory and objects tracker.

How to Unlock Fast Travel in REKA

Fast Travel is unlocked by obtaining Talismans. In our current playthrough, we have only found the Witch’s Talisman. This allows Reka to return to the Witch’s hut at any time from any location on the map.

How to Unlock Build Mode

To unlock Build Mode in REKA, players must finish the main story quests up until the Chicken House is rebuilt.

Build Mode will then be explained as part of the tutorial. Players can enter and leave build mode by pressing the “B” button on the keyboard or controller.

The Build Mode menu is used for creating flooring, walls, doors, and windows, as well as for placing furniture.

Can you Craft In REKA?

You will be able to, however, we have not discovered any means of crafting in Early Access. This may be a feature planned for a future update.

How to Get New Furniture and Clothing

Players can get furniture in REKA by completing quests or opening boxes hidden around the world map.

This includes decorations, functional furniture, and even clothing for Reka.

How To Barter With The Merchant in REKA

Bogden will set up his cart on the second map Reka visits. Here, she can barter with him for Gold. Cooked dishes sell much better than ingredients, but Bogden only has a limited amount of funds, so it’s best not to solely use bartering to get money.

Additional funds can be earned via side quests and by opening bags and boxes around the map.

How to Cook in REKA

To cook in REKA, players will need to finish the main quests from Chapter 1 and build their Chicken House. Once built, the stove at the center of the home can be used to make meals.

To make a recipe, interact with the stove and select three ingredients. Not all forageables can be mixed together to make something, so players will need to discover recipes to successfully make edible dishes.

To cook, the stove will also need fuel like wood to run. Throw a stack in to keep it hot.

Recipes take some time to cook. Once done, they will become available to pick up on the shelf beside the stove.

How to Cleanse Objects in REKA

While exploring the map in REKA, players will find objects that need to be Cleansed. To Cleanse, you will need a Pine Branch.

Wave the Pine Branch over the effected area to clear the air. Doing so will offer Reka a handful of rewards.

NOTE:
There is an area of the game that has a graveyard with four gravesites that need to be cleansed. We were able to cleanse the first two with our Pine Branch, but the others are giving an error of “needing a tool” to be cleansed. At this time, we are unsure whether this is a bug or not. This section will be updated when we have more information.

How to Leave The First Map in REKA

To leave the town of Kopnik, sit in the skeleton chair and command the chicken house to go where you say.

Head for the fog at the edges of the map and this will trigger the option to leave the current map.

WARNING:
Once players leave the Kopnik map, players will NOT be able to return. Make sure you have finished everything you want to do in this area before departing.

REKA Main Story Walkthrough

Players will begin in the beautiful woodlands outside of Kopnik. Using the compass at the top of the screen, follow the road toward the town marker.

While walking down the path, Reka will run into a down-on-his-luck merchant. Speak with Bogden to learn that the wheel has fallen off his carriage.

Head just a bit farther down the road to spot the wheel. Pick it up and return it to him to learn about him and the town Reka is headed toward.

After speaking with Bogden, head toward Kopnik. The town is busy with NPCs going about their day. Speak with each of them to learn about an old Witch who lives outside the town.

NOTE:
We recommend not doing any side quests triggered when talking to NPCs at this time. Wait to tackle these after you have finished unlocking all the needed features covered in the main quest’s tutorials.

How to Find The Old Witch’s House in Reka

To locate the old witch, speak with Tosia at the edge of town. She will warn you against going, but offers the location up and leaves you to make your own choices.

Follow the road out of town using the new location marking on the compass. Players will know they are on the right track as the number of crows on fencing will increase.

The road will lead through the swamp to a small hut. Here, an old woman stands tending chickens in the garden. Walk up to the fence to trigger a conversation.

The old woman will let Reka step inside the gate and ask for help making a stew. To do so, however, players must gather some ingredients using a recipe book as a guide.

Pick up the recipe book on the bench. This will unlock the inventory, the map, and the quest tracker.

Taking the book will start the quest “Trail of the Chicken.”

How to Complete “Trail of the Chicken” Quest in REKA

The first thing Reka must do to progress the “Trail of the Chicken” quest is to obtain the following soup ingredients:

  • x10 Edible Mushrooms
  • x6 Honeycombs

Both of these ingredients are easy to locate. Mushrooms are found growing anywhere along the road and Honeycombs can be located inside or hanging onto dead trees.

To grab items that are far away, players must aim with their Left button or Left Trigger. This is important for grabbing things up in the trees.

After completing this, it’s time for a short stop to claim the Witch’s Talisman.

How to Locate the Lutki & Get the Witch’s Talisman in REKA

Before leaving the Witch’s house to gather ingredients, she will mention a troublesome group of Lutki that have stolen an important item from her. She will mark it on your map. This is important to do before returning to continue the “Trail of the Chicken” quest.

Follow the Compass into the woods using the Talisman marker as a guide. On your way, stop and pick some Red Raspberries from some of the bushes along the road.

The Lutki will be running about a collapsed campsite just up the road from the Witch’s house. Go to them and feed them each some berries to obtain a few decorations.

Then, rescue the Lutki buried under the rubble at the center of the area. Doing so will earn players the Witch’s Talisman.

After obtaining the talisman and collecting the ingredients for the soup, use the talisman to teleport back to the Witch’s house.

How to Collect the Pine Branch & Chicken

After returning to the house, the Witch reveals that she doesn’t plan to make any soup after all. Instead, she is planning a ritual, and Reka is the key to its success.

The witch will now task Reka to obtain a Pine Branch and a Chicken before continuing the ritual.

Go out the front of the house and cross the water to the pine tree on the island. The needed branch will be illuminated.

Return to the yard and pick up any chicken from the area. Then, return to the witch.

How to Make The Chicken House in REKA

With a branch and chicken now ready for use, the Witch will lead Reka out the back door of the house. Follow her to a pile of rubble made up of wood and enormous chicken bones.

She will now instruct Reka to place the chicken in the nest at the base of the ruined oven in the center of the rubble.

After placing the chicken, the witch will have Reka light her pine branch in the candles lit around the rubble. This will create a circle of runes that go all around the ruins.

After setting the ruins, the witch will have a few more items Reka needs to gather. They are:

  • The large egg inside the Witch’s house by the front door above the picture.
  • Grain from the garden.

Bring both items to the Witch at the ruins.

She will instruct Reka to put the egg inside the oven over the chicken’s nest.

After this, players will need to place the honeycomb and grain into two bowls on the outside of the ruins.

After doing this, the witch will give you the power to dissolve the bones around the ruins. Remove all of them by walking around them.

After all the bones are gone, the Witch will request some embers from her oven. Go to the house and pick them up from the green oven at the center of the room. Bring them back to the Witch.

Upon returning, the embers will be used to finish the Ritual. This completes “The Trail of the Chicken” quest and creates a chicken house of Reka’s very own.

Following the completion of the house, players are taken through a quick tutorial on how to use build mode to place walls and furniture.

All Chapter One Sidequests in REKA

After building your house, it’s time to return to Kopnik to complete a few quests. Nothing here is deeply important, but it does build the story, and completion offers some unique decorations.

How to Complete “An Adventurous Goatling” Quest in REKA

Head back to Kopnik and enter the goat farm area near the entrance to the town. Speak with Krystyna to learn one of her goats has gone missing.

After chatting with a few of the townsfolk, Reka learns the goat has been spotted by a well near the pumpkin patch. Hurry over to the location to rescue the baby from potential harm.

Pick the goat up and return it to Krystyna. She will be very grateful and reward you with an old goat painting.

How to complete “Bringing in the Harvest” Quest in REKA

Speak to Dunja in the pumpkin patch to learn she has been widowed at a young age and left to care for the patch herself.

She will ask Reka for help moving all the pumpkins to the barn for safekeeping.

Move all the ripe pumpkins into the barn, and then speak to Dunja to earn x3 Pumpkins, x1 Hanging Wreath #3, and x1 Table of the Pumpkin Lady.

How to Complete “The Missing Friend” Quest in REKA

Head to Kopnik and speak to Yullia. She will explain that a good friend of hers has gone missing. She asks you to assist in finding him.

Follow the map south and then go a bit to the east. Here, Reka finds a skeleton hanging in the tree. Read the journal by the tree to learn he is likely the missing friend.

head back to town and speak with Yullia. Players have the option to lie about the body or tell the truth. Telling the truth leads to an option to return to the location where the man was found for a burial.

Head back to this location to speak with Yullia again. She will thank you and give you x1 Candle #5, x1 Candle #2, x1 Painting of a Landscape.

How to Complete “A Witch’s Helping Oven 1, 2, & 3” Quest in REKA

House #1

**IN PROGRESS**

House #2

Speak with the women inside the house with a well in front. She will request help cooking a Savory Meal.

Head back to the Chicken House and create Three bowls of Mushroom Soup. Bring them back and leave them on the table. Completing this quest will earn the player x1 Moon Tarot Card, Gold, and a Candle.

House #3

Head into the house next to the goat pen. Speak to the woman inside and she will request a Savory Meal.

Head back to the Chicken House and make three more bowls of Mushroom Soup. Bring them back and place them on the table. This will earn you x1 candle, and some gold.

The better you match the flavor request, the more gold you will earn when completing the quest.

How to Complete “Trail of the Forest Spirit” Quest in REKA

After arriving on the new map, the Witch will tell Reka there is more work to do. The first order of business is expanding the Chicken House. However, to do this, players must pay a visit to Leshy the Forest Spirit.

Players must first travel to the town of Barzlin and speak with the townsfolk to gather information on where Leshy may be located.

The town should spawn not far from the place where the Chicken House arrives after entering the new map. Head to the village and speak to the NPCs there for information.

The tasks players must complete are as follows:

  • Feed the deer roaming Barzlin
  • Free the rabbit trapped outside the town
  • Speak to the Lutki and destroy the first High Stand

After completing all three of these tasks, Leshy will appear to you and reveal the location of its sacred spot. This is the large tree shrouded in mist. Head there and Leshy will appear and challenge Reka to accept a challenge to right the wrongs done to the land.

Speak with Leshy at the Ancient Larch to get the next task, a trial to restore balance to the forest.

How to Restore The Balance of the Forest

After speaking with Leshy, look up at the branches of the Ancient Larch. Use the crows’ ability to get things from far away and grab as many Larch Cones as possible.

After collecting these, look at the base of the tree to find a pool of red liquid. Interact with this and place all the Larch Cones inside. This will turn these Larch Cones into Enchanted Larch Cones.

Walk around the area where the trees have been destroyed and throw the Enchanted Larch Cones when prompted.

After doing this, Leshy will grant Reka the power to fell trees.

After doing this, Reka has the choice to keep the lumberjacks from town trapped in the mists or release them.

We chose to release them, but it is unclear if this will have long-term circumstances.

This completes “The Trial of the Forest”.

NOTE: If you freed the Lumberjacks, go and speak to them in town by the Merchant wagon to get a painting and the Lumberjack’s Gratitude head decoration.

How to Find the Trapped Rabbit in REKA

Speak with Piotr in the town to get a tip about the location of an abandoned hunting trap in the forest.

Set the trap as active on the compass and head out into the wilds. When you locate the trap, free the rabbit inside to speak to the Forest Spirit.

There are other rabbits that can be freed on the map, but they do not trigger an encounter with the Forest Spirit.

How to Complete the “An Unlikely Ally” Quest in REKA

After speaking with Godzimir the hunter, Reka is told to feed the deer in town to encourage the Forest Spirit to like her.

Head into the town and feed berries to the deer wandering through the buildings. This will cause the Forest Spirit Leshy to appear.

How to Find the Lutki and Complete “The Hunter’s Folly” Quest in REKA

Speak with the Witch after landing the Chicken House and she will give Reka a tip on the location of the Lutki. Mark it on the compass and head out to find them.

Upon arrival, give the small Lutki berries for gifts. Then speak to the Elder Lutk to learn that the Lutki have been under attack. It requests that you destroy the high stands located around the map.

Locate any high stand on the map and knock it down. The first destroyed stand will cause Leshy to appear.

After destroying three High Stands, return to the Elder Lutk to obtain x4 Rustic Birch Chairs and x1 Rustic Birch Table.

All Side Quests For “Tial of the Forest”

How to Complete the “A Feast for Crows” Quest in REKA

When speaking with Piotr in town about the Rabbit locations, he will also mention that a graveyard keeper lives in the woods. This tip will allow you to register the graveyard keeper’s location on the compass. Follow it to find Tosia.

Tosia the Graveyard Keeper lives in a nice house out in the forest. Her home is situated beside a small cemetery. Go inside to speak with her, and players will learn that she isn’t at all creepy, just anti-social and corvid-motivated.

Tosia has several tasks for the player to complete. They are as follows:

Feed the Sparrow Outside Tosia’s Home

To feed the Sparrow, place x1 bowl of Fruit with Porridge in the food holder right outside the front door.

This will earn the player x1 Languid Sparrow.

Destroy the Scarecrow in Town

Tosia will also as the player destroy the scarecrows in the fields of the town. She explains that her young crows are too afraid to eat, and are quickly fading.

You can choose not to help her. We are unsure of whether this has longstanding consequences in the town.

If you do destroy them, speak to Tosia to obtain x1 Black Raven’s Coat.

Feed the Crows to Complete “A Feast for Crows”

The third task Tosia asks of the player is to leave a snack outside her home for the crows.

Make x3 Porridge and place a bowl in each of the three feeders outside Tosia’s home. Two are attached to the fence posts around the cemetery, and one is on the corner of the house.

After placing the meals, players will earn x30 Gold from the grateful crows, and x1 Crow Bone Mobile from Tosia.

How to Complete the “Winter’s Preparations” Quest in REKA

Speak to Jarmila inside the shed just outside of the hay stacks field. She will request a selection of items to restock her pantry. This includes:

  • Grain
  • Bread
  • Salt
  • Salt
  • Flour
  • Flour

Salt and Flour can be bought at the Merchant’s Wagon in town. Bread will need to be made at the Chicken House and brought back to the pantry.

Once all the goods are in the pantry, Jarmila will reward Reka with x1 Blue Wardrobe with Red Flowers, x1 Old Dresser,x1 Wooden Firewood Stack, x1 Blue Dresser, x10 Flour, and x60 Gold.

How to Complete “The Local Patron” Quest in REKA

Speak with the old woman in the house across from the pantry home. She will ask you to take a trip to leave an offering for protection over the cattle.

Craft a Pancake and head toward the post marker on the map. Be sure to craft the pancake before leaving, or you’ll have to go back twice. (Don’t make our mistake.)

Place the Pancake, and then return to the old woman in town.

NOTE: We were unable to finish this quest due to a bug. This will be updated at a future point.

How to Complete “The Smiling Hive” Quest in REKA

Head to the beehives just beside the town to find Jadwiga sitting in a chair. She will tell you that her hives are acting up, and her back is bad, making it impossible to harvest the honey from her hives.

Use a Pine Branch to calm the bees in the hives and then take the honey out. If you have lost your branch, Jadwiga will give you a tip on where to get a new one. Register the tree to your compass to grab it.

Follow these steps to complete the quest:

  • Calm the first two hives and take the honey
  • Head for the third to find it missing
  • Speak to Jadwiga about the missing hive
  • Collect the reward of candles

Players with a sharp eye will notice that the missing hive has been stolen by the Lutki. However, it isn’t possible to return the hive to it’s own at this time.

How to Complete “A Witch’s Helping Oven” for Barzlin

Like in the first map, the town of Barzlin has several townsfolk who need meals for their tables. Speak to them to learn what flavor and size of meal they are looking for.

If sweet, bring anything with honey or berries. If savory, bread and mushroom soup are perfect.

A small meal is one to two items, and a large meal is three to four.

Rewards for completing these quests increase depending on how close to the order players can fill the requests.

NOTE:
At this time this is where the story for the game ends. Those wanting to continue playing Reka can do so by exploring the open-world maps they can travel between.

What to do After Finishing the Early Access Story

Spend time exploring the open world. There are plenty of chests filled with furniture to locate and a few secret locations scattered around the map. Players can also activate side-quests unrelated to any main story to complete for rewards on each map.

Additionally, try out the Build Mode and decorate your Chicken House with everything you are able to find.

That is everything we know so far about the storyline for REKA in early access. For more cozy adventures, check out our walkthrough for Dungeons of the Hinterberg or read about a new simulator experience coming in 2025.
