The Adventure Zone Balance The Suffering Game
The McElroy brothers have been breaking my heart for years, and there isn’t anything more gut-wrenching than the story of Taako, Magnus, and Merle in The Adventure Zone: Balance. The amazing podcast has been reimagined into a stunning series of graphic novels, and the upcoming release of The Suffering Game has me shaking in my Elven boots of Featherfall.
The Suffering Game will be the seventh volume of the graphic novel series, just as it was the seventh arc of the beloved Balance podcast. Taako, Merle, and Magnus have discovered several relics, destroying them as requested by the Bureau of Balance, but each new quest creates more questions than answers. The Eleventh Hour, released in 2023, left me more anxious for The Suffering Game than I expected, as these two volumes set in motion the most important clues for the climax of the story.
The TAZ Graphic Novels Have Added New Depth

The Adventure Zone: Balance got its start in podcast format when the McElroy brothers Griffin, Justin, and Travis decided to rope their father Clint into a game of Dungeons & Dragons. Intended as a goof, they created a handful of stock characters and fumbled through The Lost Mines of Phandelver with Griffin as DM. To their surprise, the podcast immediately gained traction, and The Adventure Zone began updating regularly.
Due to its unique start, and the lack of D&D knowledge shared by the brothers and their father, it took several arcs before the story that would eventually be known as Balance took shape. Because of this, many of the early adventures lacked the cohesion seen in the last few arcs.
When The Adventure Zone graphic novel began production, Clint (the main spearhead for the podcast’s evolution) decided that some narrative grafting was needed to mesh the sincerity of the later storyline with the earlier content that was less connected with Griffin’s eventual vision. Because of this, every graphic novel volume released up to the present has packed an even harder punch than the original story – and that has me nervous for The Suffering Game.
A Journey That Leaves Readers Breathless
Currently, The Adventure Zone: The Suffering Game is set to release on July 16, 2024, according to the publication date offered on the Macmillan publishing website. This volume will take readers on a journey to retrieve The Animus Bell, with Taako, Merle, and Magnus finding themselves trapped in Wonderland.
The events of The Suffering Game set the stage for The Stolen Century, and the conclusion of The Adventure Zone, but the challenges the team faces while stuck in Wonderland are unique. Taako faces particularly deep sacrifices, and at one point, Magnus is nearly killed, with Merle and Taako retrieving his soul from the Ethereal Plane.
The short of it is, I’m just not ready. As a long-time fan of The Adventure Zone, I have only listened to The Suffering Game twice. Just listening to the trials the team faces, what they have to go through to survive and escape with the Animas Bell, and how they are brought even closer to each other is extremely emotional. Seeing it play out in color, illustrated with full expressions, is an overwhelming prospect.
I am so excited to see these iconic moments brought to life, but I am never going to be ready to go through them again as a fan. I’m positive it will be like the first time I listened to it, and I know I will cry. To me, so much of this chapter is a metaphor for the sacrifice sometimes needed to triumph. It’s a beautiful explanation of the cost the truth can come at – and I know it is going to rock me right to my core.
The McElroy family has a unique way of injecting humanity into their stories alongside the comedy and familial joy. There is a raw edge that I always appreciate when listening to their podcasts, and it has transferred beautifully into The Adventure Zone graphic novels. With minimal sneak peeks at early pages, it is likely every frame will be a roller coaster. Despite my nervousness, I know it will be a masterpiece and it will likely offer new insights that weren’t possible in the audio performances of the original podcast.
Fan can pre-order The Adventure Zone: The Suffering Game on the Macmillan website. It is set to release on July 16, 2024 both online and at participating retail stores.
